the past is the past. in the past, there were no progress-toward-graduation requirements like there are now. and guess what happens when you have too many not working out? not only are they ineligible to play, but you lose scholarships

sounds awesome

Joe Burns failed out as a senior because OLeary got players to backload their classes, meaning take all the easy ones first so you stay eligible and then as a senior you have all your hardest classes at once. I like OLeary for the most part and spoke with him on a few occasions, but i thought that was bullshit for him to do and Burns provided me with the living example

so, you guys are just as fantasy land as anyone else. you think youre gonna sign Leonard Popes and then get them to pass Calculus. great plan

im all for giving some borderlines a shot, but then you start a whole new issue if you start losing them at high rates

Yes, I believe arrogance to be the primary weakness at Tech these days. And that arrogance is why Tech is going to send more engineers out of state now that uga has engineering, and that arrogance is why Tech will be rated behind UGA in my lifetime.
I can't complain with that....it's sad that our administration can look over at UGA, with one of the highest revenues in the nation...creates a engineering program...and doesn't think to themselves....ummm we have a problem.

im not making a value judgement about it. im saying there are three options

1) create a new major with less stringent academic requirements

2) help them cheat their way through

3) sign guys that meet requirements only

you are choosing 1). im just asking, not telling what you should pick

i just want to clarify the choices

Never. I know you enjoy dropping a douce in your trousers, but please don't put it on this board.

You're a cranky old man. Tech has some awesome young engineers. Go back to a typewriter grandpa.

My point of view is.....#1.....it doesn't hurt the guys who come to school for the education.....and look if the SA wants to come here to study nuclear engineering...good for him...just don't forget about the guy who wants to work hard and get and education while representing GT on the football field

That goes to the point of my post. You can't demand something like decreased admission standards without a solution for dealing with SA academics. You can demand new majors, or more tutoring, etc. but you must think through all aspects of your ask with clear, actionable steps you want the President to take.
i agree. just letting in more borderline students is not at all the answer to our problems, it would be just another problem given the new NCAA PTG rules

When I started looking at colleges, I was no where near GT material.....But it was my goal to get in....I went to KSU my undergrad....busted my ass, and got into Tech for my grad degree....as I left KSU....I met plenty of kids that went to Tech and failed out....too many newer Tech grads have this elitist point of view that would make pioneers of this school sick....
Congrats, that is awesome. My daughter is graduating from Tech shortly. She brought her very desirable math skills with her to Tech primarily because of athletics. (Athletics attracted her to Tech long before her math skills made her valuable as a student.). I will add that she was made promises by coaching in her preferred sport that were totally a lie in the end.(she was also a D1 athlete but chose Tech and walked on).
Let me just say that Tech talks out both sides of its butt.

My Dad did physics research with Tech, he had five children through the school (my daughter chose a major that noone had done that yet). My daughters mother was a ChE, her aunts and uncles numbered another five that went through Tech. My sister and brother also married Tech engineering grads.
All of us enjoyed football firstly, my 87 year old Dad is at home right now enjoying his beloved Fighting Irish.

11 engineers, physics majors, all graduates. I am the last holdout. My daughter and I had a conversation recently. I think she is 20 years ahead of me with her frustration. And we are all from the state of Georgia. Very sad.

Well at least make APR rules equal to every college. They arent. That is just the start. That is to really care enough to make rules fair for your university.

ps, I watched Summer Saunders on an interview an hour ao where she bragged how Stanford went out of their way to help "Olympians" with special quarters they could do to stay in school but progress internationally in their sport. Tech...nah, we are more haughty than Stanford.

Well I am 53 and in great shape and extremely well versed in athletics, but I can not deny that to you that probably makes me a cranky old man.

That is great!!.....my family
Has a long line of construction.....we have a well known GC firm in ATL since my grandfather opened in the 60's after his stint in the Korean War......my great grand father went to tech in the 20's-30s....never new him but let's just say he's a legend in my family. Don't get me wrong when I say this, my family did not go to Tech for any CHe or any high level engineering degrees...we went to tech to learn how to build....and it has worked well for us, I am extremely proud of your heritage at GT....wow!!

Tech is not a private school. Hell, we couldn't even stay on the quarter system when we wanted to for academic reasons.

The sad thing is my nephew is gifted and looking at schools right now. He wants engineering, but also wants to do music. Folks say that we dont need to water down what we are about with more degrees. BS IMO, he would have been a great asset to Tech; both parents graduated, one a PhD, and he has similar potential. Folks that are so close minded is going to kill our school.

The experience of Tech is what made the best mark on me and helped in my business success. Even a football player can learn big time just from the experience. We are so arrogant now in how Ma Tech tries to choose what is best for the student. Thomas Friedman was bragging about Tech by saying how wonderful it was that the Tech student was being allowed to create their own program. If a football player wants to enjoy the Tech experience and write his own program, what is wrong with that and why is it different?

Thank you for understanding.....we need to keep a close hand on what this school has done both academically and athletically in the past.....we cannot lose sight of that...

A good buddy Mike Rhodes, who I am sure you know QB at Tech says the same thing....and he is very apathetic towards the Tech program now....I always wondered why...but now I am figuring it out....

Closed-minded is the more logical spelling of the phrasal adjective meaning intolerant of others or unreceptive to new ideas. Close-minded appears more often and is listed in some dictionaries, but it makes less sense than closed-minded. To say, for example, he is a close-minded man is technically the same as saying he is a man with a close mind. Close to what?

Still, close-minded appears in all types of writing, and it is sanctioned by dictionaries, so we’re probably fighting for a lost cause on this one.

Well unreceptive to old ideas should refer to close minded as well right?

I only say that because our old ideas of embracing our football program seems to be fading...
