It's never as good or bad as it seems. This is a conservative, Tech community, kind of hire. It was probably decided weeks ago, and they were waiting for the season to end and CCK to announce his move. I'm guessing that Roof was hired as someone who can work well with CPJ and not be radical in his strategy. I don't think we'll get a top 25 defense, but we'll be more sound and consistent. If we have the athletes we need to run the TO, the defense will probably be good enough.

Why is this funny to your friend? How can you be friends with someone after something like that?

I understand basic pranks but I don't get stuff like this. I was reading a thread on a Bama board regarding the dude that got 2yrs for the tea-bagging. They were like "who hasn't done that to a buddy"? I'm like "Uh, I've never done that or had it done to me. If I had, there'd be one less of you mfers walking around. That's for sure".

I'm trying to derail the thread. Is it working?
No where near tea bagging, just a joke war run amuck. I let 30 crickets go in his apartment after that, we called it a tie.

And why exactly would Roof be leaving PSU for Tech? I'm curious to know this after being he was there for only one year. Has anyone answered that?

Have you not read StingTalk? We are the premier program in America, we should be winning a MNC every other year. Why wouldn't a legend like Ted Roof come here?

Well for one, our program is in better shape than theirs right now.

But mainly, this is his alma mater.

It’s another thing when you come in, you’re new and you have a system that’s broad enough and diverse enough to handle whatever personnel. This league, you don’t trick people. You have to out-hit people. There won’t be much tricking going on.”
If this is his philosophy? I am fine with that....

I know some other posters have listed the stats, but I figured I'd look up as many stats as I could to try to make me feel better about this hire and compile them all together. These numbers are going to be from his time as a DC only.

2012- Penn State
23rd Rush - 128 yards/game
50th Pass - 255 yards/game
29th Total - 353 yards/game
16th Scoring - 19 pts/game

2011- Auburn (was only at UCF 33 days)
94th Rush- 189 yards/game
51st Pass - 218 yards/game
81st Total - 408 yards/game
79 Scoring - 29 pts/game

2010 - Auburn
9th Rush - 109 yards/game
108th Pass - 259 yards/game
60th Total - 369 yards/game
53rd Scoring - 24 pts/game

2009 - Auburn
78th Rush - 156 yards/game
57th Pass - 218 yards/game
68th Total - 374 yards/game
79th Scoring - 28 pts/game

2008 - Minn
68 Rush - 143 yards/game
93rd Pass - 240 yards/game
80th total - 383 yards/game
61st Scoring - 25 pts/game

It should be worth noting that Minn had the worst defense in FBS in 2007. They won 1 game in 2007 and went 7-5 in 2008. So while those numbers aren't exactly stellar they are a huge improvement from the year prior.

2003- Duke
63rd Rush - 158 yards/game
53rd Pass - 217 yards/game
57th total - 375 yards/game
76th Scoring - 29 pts/game

2002 - Duke
28th Rush - 120 yards/game
102nd Pass - 254 yards/game
65th total - 375 yards/game
83rd Scoring - 29 pts/game

2001 - GT
23rd Rush - 117 yards/game
53rd Pass - 216 yards/game
32nd Total - 333 yards/game
37 Scoring - 22 pts/game

2000 - GT
12th Rush - 94 yards/game
114th Pass- 285 yards/game
70th Total - 379 yards/game
21st Scoring - 19 pts/game

1999- GT
89th Rush - 189 yards/game
100 total - 413 - yards/game
93rd Scoring - 30.3 pts/game

What I take from this is that Roof is aggressive on D to stop the run but doesn't seem to be too great at stopping the pass. While I think this is the approach Tech needs to adopt to win games, aggressive D that can pressure the QB and stop the run, I'm not sure I like Roof as the coach.
He's due for a good year

Unfortunately I read most of BS on ST, but didn't see this. Actually saw why he left PSU.. He felt unstable.

Better shape is questionable, but I'll give you that. I knew this was his alma mater but still find it odd that he'd come back after being at PSU..

I welcome him back..

BTW.. Has anyone pointed that he is an ex head coach??

if you have a better method let me know. Otherwise i will stick to this as it GENERALLY over a 15 year career of evaluating a coach or system works to be true.

Can you find an example here or there, sure, but statistically this is the best representation. Stop using single examples as evidence that something on a general basis doesn't work.

It does. It shows you year after year what the best D's are and it is generally right.
I've got a FLAWLESS metric for measuring defenses. Wins vs losses. 2010 Auburn team won every game. That means their defense allowed fewer points than their offense scored.

That, my friend, is kinda the definition of winning a football game. Not yards per play, yards per game or any other stat. To quote a famous saying "stats are for losers".

considering we were all overjoyed at the Groh hire. I expect our ineptitude when it comes to evaluating coordinators will shine through with this hire, and we will have a top 15 D next year.

Will improve the defense, pretty much has to, since it can't get any worse.

This hire wasn't about the defense winning ball games. Just being marginally better on D means more wins.

I guess the topic that divides the fan base has been settled already for 2013. I'm glad it won't be the QB again, that was miserable. At least it will be on the side of the ball where we actually have problems.

Here's to new arguments in 2013.

anyone else find this hire ironic after hearing about CPJ's comments on rewriting history?

Allowing fewer points in a game of college football than Cam Newton can score is something about half of FBS defenses could have done in 2010. To quote a famous saying "herp derp".

I would have perferred CCK over Roof. There must have been a large rift between he and CPJ otherwise this hire makes no sense.

Ask Chip Kelly what he thinks about Roof's defense. His offense averaged 49 points per game. But Ted's defense held him to 19 points...which was one less than that AWESOME CAM NEWTON-LED offense scored.

So on a night, in the biggest game of the year, the offense lays a turd for most of the game and the defense bailed them out. That's what's called winning a game and winning a national championship....f**k the stats. So herp the derp up your ass.

Could be a good hire. We'll see. But he absolutely without a doubt could not have picked a more divisive hire. Makes you wonder whether he did it on purpose.
Please. CPJ doesn't give a öööö about what fans think, and even if he did he wouldn't give a öööö what the delusional nutters on this board think.
