Mediocre Zero Points Allowed

I really liked seeing J. Thomas throw the receiver to the ground. We have had so few heavy hitters on defense over the years. JHD didn't get a big shot in other than blowing through the receiver after his pick. Didn't see A. Harrell put a lick on anyone. A. Gotsis just missed blowing up the ball carrier when he reversed field.

Didn't think L. Young had a particularly good game - missed a tackle.

We need to figure out a way to dial up pressure. They got the ball off quick often, but even in drop back sets, I thought we were getting blocked out.

Watts was pitting his nose in there - good to see.

Tough to take anything away from a game against Elon, but you've got to like the shutout and the turnovers.

they had 3 drives of over 10 plays, none of which led to points. please show me where the "sustained drives" are

Those quick slants were our achilles heel last year. It seems we stuck linebackers in there at times to stop it, but that opened up the delayed draw up the middle. Sneezy didn't have a very good game and the announcers noted that. I think he's our entire pass rush without blitzing.

Those 3 drives of over ten plays maybe.

By comparison, that UNC defense we ran all over last year held them to 170 total yards in a 62-0 thumping.

We got the opening game shutout which I really wanted. Our D is going to be pretty decent. I think a lot of Elon's extended drives occurred against some of our back-ups at LB and DB.

If you look just at the overall numbers, you could say that 37.5% 3rd Down Conversion allowed is typically alright, but it's not great against an FCS opponent. However, I also don't recall us doing a whole lot in terms of scheme. In other words, it seems to me that our D performance was really pretty good considering how vanilla we seemed to be playing.

Lou Young, imo, still needs to back-up his preseason words. Some of his missed tackles were really kind of what the what. Paul Davis is going to be a good player for us, especially against the run, but I hope we don't need him to go into pass coverage against 6'3" TEs very often. There's still a big difference between him and Quayshawn who can jump up and deflect mid range passes etc.

All in all a very good game by the D

I think it was a good defensive game with a lot to work on in the next two weeks. The Elon team is really bad and I expect a very good defense to stone them. Fortunately, I don't think we need a very good defense to be successful. There were some good performances, but their were certainly some who didn't have their best game which we are going to need as the season goes on.

Pretty much what I saw. If we don't get more pressure on qb and tighten up on the slants we are in for some long days against the better teams we play. Also still have to much missing tackles although that was an improvement from last years except for Young.

The single sack is most likely due to them being option heavy. Defense can't pin their ears back and knife to the QB as much.

This. They weren't drop back at all. We never had the chance to pin our ears back and as it turned out didn't need to. Scrimmage is over Bring on the conference!

We played very close to the vest and were in position to make good plays.

It's tough to look at total yards as a fault of the D rather than the sheer number of drives they had.

The debbie downers can moan about our imperfections on defense. Being a fan, I'll let the coaches worry about that stuff while I enjoy the heck out of that dominating shutout performance ... even if it was against Elon.

Wow, what a teriffic breath of fresh air, a major +1 and Thank You ....

I was worried about pressure until I realized that almost always were 4 on 6 in the pass rush. It's hard to get pressure like that. When they tried to run block us we were absolutely disruptive on the front 4 which is what I wanted to see.

Considering that we failed to shutout the mighty Blue Hose last year, this is definitely a step in the right direction. I will take a 1998'esque bend, but don't break defense in a New York minute.

From AJC:
After a month of preseason, Tech checked off pretty much everything off the list – a pile of smooth drives for the offense, a near shutout for the defense and the starters got into the locker room without injury. The final result was a 70-0 defeat of Elon Saturday at Bobby Dodd Stadium.

What constitutes a complete shutout? Zero yards allowed?

As fans, there's little we can take away from this game beyond being glad we took care of biz.

I'm certain there's much that the coaches will ID that needs work and that's about all you can take from this kind of game.

Yeah, I would bet your average D-1 team would score at least twice as many.

Was at the game. It was an old fashioned beat down against a clearly outmatched opponent.

And look across all of college football and find me a bigger beating. Even #3 Oregon yielded points to Nicholls St (and also won't score 70).

Anyone nitpicking at this point is way out to lunch. We're not even ranked and this game will make zero dents in the voting, so don't worry. We'll find out for real in a couple weeks.

I think he means our defense nearly got shut out. Good thing they scored twice, would NOT want the defense to get shut out against Elon.
