Transfers and position changes

Certainly I can see some B Backs playing FullBack or RB. I just don't see the many A Backs as having a good opportunity. Yes a few will become SlotBacks and maybe one or two can move to WR. But options at ST, WR, SlotBack seem few to me for most of those guys. I would however hope that we can find a couple of Edelman types.

Talking about the lack of a TE, I would think many of PJ's OL could somewhat easily switch over to TE. TE's are blockers first, receivers second and PJ's Linemen were recruited because they could run to the second level. My guess is we'll be okay here until TE's fill in the system.

At QB, anything goes. We could be just fine or in a big heap of trouble simply because this position takes experience and we have none. This position will be fun to watch both for who gets the job and how they play and because I think someone will transfer.

I agree on b-backs moving to running back.... they are about the size of a normal running back in a power running program. A-backs are a tough one. Honestly, if I were coach, I would take a look to see if any of them could make a transition to defensive back. Don't know that I agree that tight ends are blockers first, receivers second. We definitely have some work to do in that regard. Hopefully we can sign some studs that start for a few years while we fill in the role.

Doubt any OL could play an effective pass-catching TE for us. We do have a very good grad transfer there and we will have a tFr. Maybe a couple other players who could be TE depth if we needed it. Cooksey played TE some in HS and hasn't seen the field much at LB. Also, I think rFr Luke Johns (DE) played some TE in HS. 6-5, 235 and was a track and field star in HS in long jump, high jump, and triple jump, so he's very agile and athletic for a big man.

Sure, they should be able to play fb or tb, but don't think b-back is a directly translatable position.

Most a-backs will be small tailbacks. Some will hopefully make it as wr. Again, you rely on their background and skill set, rather than directly translate their role as a-back.

Spread option quarterbacks may stay at qb, but most will have position changes ahead of them. Tailback is the most translatable. More tailbacks.

Ideally, we'd have jumbo wr who could turn into move te's. Alas, if you can play move te, the other schools fought to get you, and we did not fight other big schools. And we need wr's.

We don't have enough offensive linemen to convert to te, even if they had the skill set, which I don't see. You may see someone on the field as a third te on obvious running downs, but they are still offensive linemen.

The most obvious position change for tight ends are always linebackers coming in as freshmen. They usually play both position anyway. But defensive players are at a premium in this regime, whether they stay at linebacker or grow as ends.

A little bit of hyperbole. More accurately, they don't regularly block, not even up to tailback levels. Not a lot of pass pro. Their primary role is to distract. If they complete their blocks that is bonus. But that is history. They will be taught what they will need to do.

Just know that there is not one single type of block. Every angle has its own blocking skill requirements.

Our BB's and AB's dont read holes, they just run to a spot whether it's open or not. It's not rocket science to teach how to read holes but the instinct part (cut backs, etc) just take experience to develop. I'm sure it will come back to them from their HS days. Our OL dont know how to pass block at all, nor have they ever had to set up with their weight on their heels rather than weight forward. Our QB's will have to work on their footwork since they've always been taught to do this weird drop back with it's left-handed drop back-to-right handed throw. I still dont understand why we did this but it's in the past now. Yes, this will be a fascinating year to say the least.

What a memory! I ran into Beno at one of the Buckhead bars the night of this game. I yelled his name from across the bar and acted like i was throwing him a pass. He caught it and had a good laugh. Proceeded to some fireball shots after. Good guy.
