Transfers heating up...as needed

Did not think about this. That is an excellent tidbit right there. Could very well squash that "100 mile" rule, seeing as he can't move closer to home at ANY top tier school and be that close... as long as he's moving "closer" to home, then maybe he can get in on that reasoning.

Yeah.

Tech: 130 miles
uga: 160 miles
Auburn: 130 miles
FSU: 130 miles
Ga Southern (why not?) 140 miles

UF is 200 miles, so he is moving at least somewhat closer. But yeah, unless I am missing something, Vienna is just in the middle of no man's land.

I respectfully disagree. We already have too many transfers. Players get tired of not playing enough and start looking around – which means coaches have every incentive to poach them... (including making promises they can't keep).

It's like CPJ said about commitments – all the commitment means is that you've got a chance to sign them. Imagine if signing them just meant you've got a *chance* to play them. At some point it's just terribly destructive on the kids and on the teams to have them constantly thinking about the green grass on the other side of the fence. It becomes way too much like free agency.

I agree that a coaching change should probably be a free pass, or a medical/family/etc. hardship. But otherwise, everybody oughta dance with the one that brung them. As you can tell, I'm a committed monogamist.

I hear ya. But, my argument is that the NCAA is ill-equipped to handle each situation fairly, and it basically giving guys incentive to just make things up if they want to transfer without having to sit. So I would be in favor of one free transfer. After that, you sit and lose a year, no matter what.

Isn't this discriminatory for players in Wyoming, Utah, and New Mexico?

You mean, kinda like coaches do...commit to a school and get a better offer and leave? So the coaches should have that ability but the players shouldn't? Sounds a bit 'indentured' to me.

Yep. Coaches are employees and can get fired anytime. Players are students whose scholarships should be honored. Big big difference to me. This is an essential difference between amateur players and professionals.

No. Players are students on one year athletic scholarships. Students on academic scholarships can lose those if they don't meet academic expectations from year to year but somehow people have this notion that players on an athletic scholarship for one year deserve to be given the scholarship the next year if they don't meet the athletic expectations from year to year.

If you want to give a player the option of transferring to another school or staying in school and moving to an academic scholarship while no longer being on the team, then I'm fine with that. But having been a scholarship baseball player who had to perform year over year to keep the scholarship money, I have absolutely zero issue with the school not renewing the football scholarship for the next year.

Nate's situation is unique. He has speed and talent, just having a hard time finding his spot in this offense it seems. He's also a great character guy, vocal leader and leader by example, great locker room guy, absolutely loves Tech, and from what I hear coaches really like him. He loves the game also and I know he wants to play and I doubt he would give up the last year of eligibility. Being a graduate is probably weighing hard on his decision since he knows that he could open up a spot we need and he has already earned his degree. I think he wants to find his fit here though and remain with Tech and I think coaches would wish him to stay and hopefully can find a place to shine, but have also probably told him the reality that he may not see much field time if he can't. Wishing the best for him in whatever he does.
We dont need his spot unless we plan to hit the portal hard ourselves.

So coaches are employees and players are indentured servants?
