Once upon a time, supposedly,GT counted failed courses in GPA computation, resulting in a lower figure than schools that excluded failures. Is this still true, or was it ever so?

What? Of course failed courses count towards your GPA, where do they not? The only exception to this is the freshman forgiveness policy, which they just extended (I think) to students in all years that allows you to do grade replacement on up to two classes during your time at Tech. Even then, this would only affect your Tech GPA, not HOPE.

This "forgiveness policy" you are talking about is a new thing for the old timers. I'm pretty sure that is exactly what goldeagle is talking about.

Seem to remember 2.5 being the avg in the 70's.

I got a few Cs in core classes that I ignored. The classes required only a modicum of attention and I didnt bother.

Then again, I had major classes that were super tough that I was happy about scraping by. Cs4290 ftw.

Other schools (auburn I know for sure) allow for replacement of failing grades once you repeat the class.

So if you Fail your bowling class (seriously), and take it again and get an A, your GPA only reflects the A.

Any data out there on historical GT trend? I got out in the early 90s and those numbers sound way higher than I recall.
Wow, our beloved GT has caved into the grade inflation pressure since I got out in the early 90s myself? Back then, I remember the school GPA average was something crazy low, like 2.6. You had to fight and claw just to get above 3.0, and to do so you had to beat out world-class international students since Tech graded strictly on the bell curve. To be average in a class room full of the top 99.99 percentile of intelligence earned you a C.

When I was in school, I believe the campus wide GPA was lower than 2.5

Spot on! I've read somewhere GT was unique wrt this policy, as it was, and is, unique in many regards. Seems like double jeopardy to not drop the failed grade after re-taking and passing the course .
