I listened to Dabo the other night and he spoke of his philosophy.

It is about Fun. His kids know each season is a restart - not an extenson of the year before.

Kids did not, in a total program environment, want to play in our old system.

We Never built a good D, etc. All old news now.

We hurt GT by not embracing greater goals going forward. Past us gone.
All you got to do is look at recruiting class 1 under Collins to understand PJ is wrong about GT.

And recruiting class 1 is coming off 3-9. Just wait until Collins starts winning.

In my opinion Paul Johnson was a great coach for us, and I expect he'll one day be in the College Football Hall Of Fame. But he wasn't perfect, and it was time to turn the page. I was at Tech when Bobby Dodd was our coach. His glory years were 1951 - 56 (61-7-3), but while I was there, he was 23-18-1. So Dodd wasn't perfect either. Geoff Collins is a refreshing change, and I'm rooting for his success. Why do so many of you feel you need to 'take sides' when it comes to Tech coaches? It makes us look small.

I don’t think it’s “taking sides”. But Paul Johnson says some negative things about GT. He has constantly attributed 100% of failure to the institution while never acknowledging his system as a factor for his inability to recruit.

The graduates complain about the school too, is that taking sides? :ughrun:

And if he publicly admitted the downsides of his system, do you think that would help his recruiting? His opponents would just use it against us. We need to stop being so negative.

And if it weren't for rule changes, a bad AD hamstringing him, and a sometimes nasty inability to field a good defense and special teams he'd likely still be here. Also Sewak.
i think the rules change coincided with the change in his demeanor. I feel like he has a legitimate gripe in how the deck was consistently stacked against him.

Dabo is the best coach in the country. If CGC can motivate kids and make them want them to be a part of GT football anywhere near as well as Dabo, we'll be just fine.

How much fun do you think it is to be in Coach K's program?

I find it interesting that the option is becoming so much more accepted across football as cutting edge (vs retro) this year.

There is more than one way to skin a cat, or so they say.

Obviously all great teams do the X's and O's stuff well, and recruit at a high level. But the elite coaches have something that sets them apart.
Saban wins with a business-like focus and discipline. Swinney wins with motivation and team culture. Other coaches (CPJ, Meyer, Leach, Riley) win by being uniquely talented in terms of scheme or playcalling. Coach K seems to be more of the Saban mold.

My father was Class of 1950, My childhood memories of the late 50's and early 60's included my father and other alumni constantly bemoaning Dodd's conservatism and lack of "winning the big game". The last ten years of Dodd's tenure seemed lackluster, but his winning pct. was still up in the 60% range. That run 1951 to 1956 set the bar pretty high. Tech fans have been chasing that rainbow for the last 60 years.

They still have to maintain eligibility.
True, and the X-factor will be can we find enough kids with that rare combination of classroom and football talent to make a go of it. We should be able to find plenty if we go searching for them.

But it is option principles out of the more traditional offense of today: shotgun snap, pass a lot offense.

It causes you to wonder why Johnson couldn't figure out how to implement changes to his offense that would have at least "looked" modern.

Speaking of Leach, for those of you with a subscription to The Athletic, there was an awesome article about Mike Leach and his quarterbacks room back in August. I laughed so hard I damn near had tears in my eyes.

Jeff Tuel, 2012: We’d watch a play and he’d go, “Good.” Next play. “Good ball.” Next play. “What did you see here?” “I saw leverage on outside ‘backer.” He’d take the laser pointer and circle an empty plot of green grass. “Throw it over here next time.” Next play. It was always just like, “Wherever people aren’t, throw it there.” Or, “He’s open. You should have thrown it over there.”
