Which QB would you prefer?

Dumb.

I feel very safe in saying that we will not be a good team with JG. We will not win close games against good teams with JG. You guys have seen him play, right? You've seen the size and type of the QB's we've signed, yes? He's playing because he was the best of what we had. He's not the future. He's a bridge to tomorrow right now. It's a shame, really. Wasted talent. Not his fault. Not the coaches' fault. Victim of circumstance.
The ideal scenario would have been to grab a grad transfer QB and have Lucas back him up. That may have allowed us to move JG to another position like we did with Oliver. But it just wasn't in the cards.

Then again, without the opportunity to compete at QB, Graham may have gone ahead and transferred out when he was ineligible. Either way, I think Patenaude actually deserves some credit for JG playing as well as he did. It's been so long that I think folks just don't realize what you need in a QB for the type of offense we are trying to run now.

The situations are incomparable. Different eras, different coaches, different offenses, different teams, different opponents. Apples to oranges. James Graham is so very inaccurate and his decision making is very below average. His ceiling is low. The only thing he has going for him is he is athletic. I am hoping one of the freshman QBs is good enough to beat him out this fall.
Why do you see his ceiling as low? His errors to me looked all mental, although I'm including footwork and mechanical inconsistencies in that category. When Graham is poised, he has all the tools. I don't think he's an inaccurate passer based on physical tools or mechanics other than his consistency with them. Therefore, I see a high ceiling guy. He has the ability to do anything we could want, height, and athleticism.

Obviously that's not enough. Whether he will develop as a QB and consistently do the basic things or hold up under pressure are yet to be seen, and there are plenty of high upside QBs vying for his spot which may see him never getting an opportunity to seize.

Perhaps others with keener sight may see more clearly, but it looks to me like Graham's natural position is quarterback.

Our o-line this year won't be great, either, but it will be much better than last year's, and we'll have better receivers. And we won't be playing extreme catch-up as much, so Graham with experience should be better than Graham without experience last year.

I think Graham is our most experienced QB, and it is up to the other players to knock him off, not based on what Graham did last year but what he does this upcoming set of practices and early season. I hope they all play lights out, but Graham will either be our experienced starter or he will be our experienced back-up and either is fine with me as long as players earn what they get.

And NONE of you have any clue what Graham will show this fall, or what Yates or the true Freshmen will show. Stop watching the previews and wait for the movie.

QB is not a natural position for a guy his size. Not unless you’re running the TO. Even then, I wouldn’t call it natural.

He’s a slot receiver in today’s game. Probably PR as well.

2020 is another building year and we will rotate QB’s. Collins is smart enough to know he has to find the right guy moving forward because the others will transfer out. I expect all 4 to get a shot over the course of the season unless Graham just comes out hot and keeps the job. Collins also knows he has the kid from Cali coming so has time to get it right. But, fans will whine the entire season. I want Collins to build the program the right way and not take short cuts. I’m glad TStan has the long view.

I don’t think you can tell much after his first year. Particularly, the first year in a completely new offense with very little protection. I think increasing the level of competition at the position pushes everybody and I expect improved line play. Going to be fun to watch the development.

I would be VERY interested to know how well JG throws in practice with really NO rush.( 7 on 7)If he can't hit 9 of 10 (or 8 at worst) in that scene then he is not the passer we need.
Not having a full Spring helped him relative to the new Fr also.I would think he will start the first 4 games anyway.

So many criticized the OC and yet praised Key. Key’s OL was the worst in the ACC, but that is not his fault. Nor was it the QBs fault, or the OC’s fault.
Because it was fairly obvious that Oline, even with the injuries, improved over the course of the season. Our running game was also pretty good and he is the running game coordinator.

then you have pnode. Obvious terrible play calling. Nix like really. Qbs didn’t improve over the season.

I will be really disappointed if neither of the incoming freshman QBs don't claim the job by midseason.

I think JG has a high ceiling. He has a strong arm and can make the defense pay with his legs. Yes, he has room to go on mechanics and consistency, but the same would be true of any QB coming from the option. Last year he worked behind a makeshift O-line and was down two receivers, one due to injury and the other due to transfer eligibility. I’m excited to see what he can do will a full compliment of receivers and what I suspect will be a vastly improved O-Line this year. Additional competition in the QB room will only further his development.

Here we go again. So you have an offense with an inconsistent OL, a fairly pedestrian receiver group and a raw QB learning a new system under fire and it’s all about play calling. Sure. And btw if you didn’t see JG improve over the year you have no business commenting.

If you call heaving a ball down field to our 4.2 slot receiver, and hoping he’d run under improvement, fine.

my fondest memory of playing this past season was A 3rd and ten call vs vpisu or unc. Trips right and the routes were 9 yard hitch route, 9 yard hitch route, and 9 yard hitch route vs man coverage. Brilliant.

Guarantee those routes were not designed to be run at 9 yards.

Honestly, if you take away the 5ish straight short yardage plays that Patenaude ran out of shotgun against Clemson when we still had a chance to not get completely skull ööööed I don’t know what I’d think about him. First impressions are tough to shake though.

Okay I just watched a couple condensed games on youtube just to remind myself of why I formed such a negative opinion on Graham as a QB. I see a guy who's arm is actually stronger than I remember but has horrible accuracy. He reminds me of the typical Paul Johnson QB where a completed pass felt more like a random strike than an intended target. He just looks like a good athlete forced to play QB rather than a QB who happens to be a good athlete. I fully expect one of the two freshman QBs to assert themselves by the end of the season and JG moved to different position.

If so then it will probably Gleason. Sims is an athlete playing QB who could just dominate against high school teams. Gleason plays like a QB.
