For those who missed it

Here are a few gifs i decided to breakdown to give an idea of what happened on field vs. Syracuse

Offense:

A lot of style without the substance of scoring TDs or points at all. I believe Sims is the future but he is a freshman and will make mistakes. Currently, Sims has some BAD luck. Here are the two tipped INTs

Here is an RPO vs Cuse’s man blitz
1) Initially, i thought this should’ve been a give to the RPO but the back camera shows you what Sims see, which is #11 stepping up on run support leaving a void for the slant.

Problem:
1) Quinney does a poor job washing the defender down who ultimately makes the play. A better block would give Sims the opportunity to make the throw to Carter in 1on1 coverage

2) Even if completed we appear have OL(Johnson) downfield

Football word of the day is Scat
That’s the pass protection called when you send 5 receivers

Clearly, our offense has an idea of what Syracuse wants to do. With this route combo vs man coverage vertical/zig/swing pulls the LB out the middle LB clearing the way for the intended target, Camp, on the slant.

Problem with pass pro, you have to get a body on a body. Williams & Johnson double team the pinching DE leaving the LB (who timed the blitz perfectly) unblocked

Speaking of timing, one the biggest blunders CDP had imo with Sims is slowing the game down. This is why i didn’t mind the timeout vs. UCF when dealing with a True Freshman. Multiple times vs the blitz we snapped the ball with 20+ left in the play clock instead resetting the offense or pointing blitzers for the OLineman to pick up

Poor execution

I’m ok with play but not with the personnel nor execution. This play screamed pass with Jamious at FB. Also, a bad sell on the give. There was nothing to make #13 pause so this could be completed. If given time, Ward was wide open in the end zone. (Look bottom of screen

Defense-

The theme so far for our defense has been lack of trust and discipline.

Let’s start our apology tour to Curry. We ask why no one can surplant Curry at the LB spot it’s bc of mistakes like this

giphy.gif

3rd & 20

3 man rush 2 spies

Rule number 1 as spy. If you gonna shoot your gun, you better hit your target. Knight does the right thing by rushing, but inexplicably rushes inside where his help (Curry is already is) and this mistake almost leads to a 1st down

Not so sorry
Syracuse in a Gun strong look (RB on the same side as TE)

Appear to be a power play

We have a outside WLB blitz

Problem:

Essentially, Syracuse scored a TD with 3 lineman blocking 6 defenders

on the the right side, we have 2 defenders on the outside shoulder of the tackle. I believe the DT is in the wrong gap as well but manages to take 2 lineman out

Left side- The MLB read key is a G/ T thru to the RB. The tackle pulls which should take the LB there as well. For some odd reason, he jumps outside with the unblocked DE when it’s run away from him

In this cluster**** of play, we should’ve had Curry scraping over the top and the unaccounted for Safety for the tackle. Instead we have a guy who takes himself out of the play completely, missed tackle by the FS and the strong safety who assumes the tackle will be made and watches for a TD

Basic understanding of alignment & assignment

giphy.gif

This lack of discipline is just as nerve wrecking as the penalty. Oliver is the force player meaning he is contain and nothing should get outside of him. Why he is stutter stepping and not forcing the ball to 4 defenders giving chase is beyond me

????

This play confused me a lot. I initially thought it was quarters coverage until i saw the CB up top but i see Spider open up & giving up the inside which usually a sign that he expects help. Ima label this as a busted coverage

Our DBs must win at the LOS with their bigger frames and longer arms.

This is very bad technique by Spider not a getting the jam. We must get better at this or it will be bombs away

Good Stuff.

The defensive stuff bothers me more than the offense because the mistakes were from experienced players and seemed like lack of understanding versus execution.

Maybe for Sims stat line specifically those tipped INTs are bad luck but the team deserved those turnovers on the box score. He’s had his fair share of horrible decisions/throws that ended up as picks as well as a few that were fortunate to not (the backfoot prayer over the middle in 4Q FSU).

Feels like we’re gonna have to decide soon if we’re going to play for the future and let him set a turnover record this year / put Graham back in and try to squeeze out an extra win or two (if Graham is even available?). I’m inclined to stick with Sims due to us having moved the ball well in between turnovers.

We have got to get better protection for Sims. He cannot (nor could any other QB) be expected to operate effectively if he has to EXPECT a breakdown of blocking on every play.

The worse a line blocks, the more Sims is going to not run through processions and try to throw the ball to his first target, probably decided pre snap. We need to give him time to run through 2-3 progressions or passes will continue to be forced

The question is how different would the offense production be with a different QB. Not sure if we really increase our chances of winning games if we go toward last years fewer turnovers, fewer yards offense.

This is a true service. Thank you.

What are your thoughts on the offensive play calling and the idea of what CDP is trying to do with the offense (execution issues aside)? It seems like the calls aren’t all that bad and that this could be a very fun offense when things fall into place (personal and ignorant opinion).

The calls are the exactly same as last year. It just looks better bc of the OL & QB. My Only gripe is his commitment to be balanced instead going with the flow of the game. If you’re getting 6yds/run then there is no need to pass 3 consecutive times

I don't want to put words in your mouth, but do you believe we should run less hurry-up with a TFr quarterback?

I like some, but as a change of pace once or twice a game plus clock situations. I think Sims would be served with a slower pace early in the year.

It just looks like our defenders have bad football instincts. There's 20 plays a game where our players press the ball away from help. It's maddening.

The answer is none at all

If that's the case then why play Sims? It's not playing for the future all that much more than Graham, only a 1 year difference. Unless your saying the OL is still so bad it doesnt matter which QB we use?

No not less but coach Sims vs pressure packages like Syracuse uses and teach that it’s ok to use 5 additional seconds of the playclock so either he or center can set the protection properly

In that game, it didn’t bc the pressure wasn’t blocked well. So you’re going to bring a shorter Yates who can’t throw over the pressure or Graham who is inaccurate on the short to intermediate routes you would use in those instances.
