CPJ Mad Bro

I am a big fan of CPJ, but the 09 team wasn’t balanced. How many games did we go without forcing a punt? By the end of the season we were just plain bad on defense.

People who keep arguing that CPJ inherited a stacked roster conveniently forget the huge gaps we had in 2009. We had a decent DL; but every position group behind it was suspect. Sure, we had MB back there; but he was just one guy. There is an obvious reason why UGA ran the ball down our throat, and it was because the front 7 wasn't talented enough to stop it. Richt saw it and exploited it, nothing fancy, just run the ball down our throat. It wasn't the X's and O's, it was the Jimmy's and Joe's.

We had a similar problem with lack of bodies/talent on OL. There was a lot of optimizing the players you have rather than whining about the players you want in 2008 & 2009.

His folks sat next to me at BDS. Great people, and always looking for him to get into the games after he fell out of favor. I never understood why he disappeared until now.

So are you guys saying that he sat because some coach got his feelings hurt or something?

UGA ran down our throat was more run fits than jimmy & joes. They ran inside zone scheme that took advantage of cutback lanes. Back side was out of position

And we won 7 games....what a great coach! No Football Talent (your term) and still won 7 games. The current staff took that same, no Football Talent and hasn't won 7 games in two years.

1) we didn’t win 7 games every year

2) Wasnt “no football talent” but very little especially over the last 4yrs where attention to the OL and DL was glaring during the transition.

3) Football talent consist of attributes and abilities. We had very OL that was big enough to move bodies, move backwards to pass set bc they always played with 100% of their weight on their hands, or use their length to keep defenders out their chest.

4) So how many games should’ve the staff won in 2 yrs with the abundance talent they inherited?

Really would have been a good game to have Tenuta at DC

By the 7 game measure, we should have never fired Gailey.

What a horrendous take. DL in 09 was probably the weakest part of the defense despite having Morgan. The rest of the line was slaw. That being said that DL was better than any Johnson recruited.

LB wasn’t amazing compared to what O’Leary and Gailey were putting on the field but I’d take it over the vast majority of what Johnson recruited.

That secondary was stacked. Morgan Burnett speaks for himself. Butler and JWD easily top 10 all time Tech corners. Tarrant probably a top ten guy as well. Definitely a top 5 PR.

I’d be interested in your prediction of how Gailey would have done in 08/09 given you have way more insight than any of the rest of us.

From the ESPN recap of the 2009 game

But coach Paul Johnson abandoned the triple option, taking three straight deep shots through the air -- all incomplete -- to leave the Yellow Jackets facing fourth-and-10.
I definitely don’t miss those ööööing games where he pulled that bullshit

3 bombs and then an out route.

we lost to a 6-5, Joe Cox-led, fresh off losing to Kentucky uga team with a top 10 team and, at
worst, our second most talented team since the 60s.

To me there is no arguing that was not the worst in Tech history. Took much of the joy out of winning the ACC.

Gailey was too conservative for my liking but Coach Bond was there to implement the spread. Dwyer would’ve been Dwyer. WR would’ve been sick too Baybay
DJ Donley
Corey Earls slot
Assuming Peak would stayed at TE

Would’ve been interesting seeing Renfree vs Nesbitt.

Defense would've been Good.

Coach Bond sucked at State after leaving Tech though. And I don’t think he’s accomplished anything since really. I’m not sure he’d have ever gotten it done.

You aren't asking me, but JJacket has been on here claiming we would have won both 2008 and 2009 with Gailey.

And there he is a again, the 'everybody was top 10 in Georgia Tech history!!' guy.

I think he coached his butt off in 2018 and it amounted to 7 wins and a total embarrasment in Detroit. Based on the recruiting trend and rule changes, 7 wins was probably going to be his ceiling moving forward. He saw that and that's why he didn't stick around another year or 2, IMO.

Hard to knock an option coach for calling plays to exploit what the defense is giving him. IIRC Hill just quit on a route that would’ve been a wide-open TD on 2nd or 3rd. And the best player on the team drops a wide-open pitch and catch on 4th. If the defense is expecting run and blitzing lanes accordingly, then you’ve got to pass.

Similar situation 2014 against VPI when we’re down 7 late on their half of the field and their corners are run blitzing every play. So we take two shots downfield and the second is a walk-in TD. Pick and a FG later and we’re on our way to the best season in two and half decades.

When it works you’re a genius playcaller. When your 1st round pick WR drops a gimme you’re an idiot. Such is football.

I would strongly disagree that CPJ coached his butt off in 2018. He knew he was on his way out and I personally think he lost some of his competitive fire after 2015. I know he was older; but his emotion on sideline was visibly different his last 3 years compared to his first 5 years. That is why it doesn't surprise me he hasn't gotten back into coaching. I agree with you about the recruiting trend, the years of lack of support from GTAA played a part not only in his game day attitude; but also his recruiting energy I would bet. I would also agree that 7-8-9 win seasons were going to be the norm going forward if he would have stayed; which I don't think TStan was going to allow him to do. He just left earlier than TSTan was planning.
