These next 6 games are going to be a window into next season. I’d draw a line under this stat line and closely watch Sims 1st half vs 2nd half of season stats. If we see a step change up, next year will be much better, potentially 3 wins better. If he flat lines, well Houston we have a problem.

I like Yates stability, but he will not win games that are in that 30% win percentage category. He’ll manage effectively and win the games he should win, but he’ll also lose the games he should lose. With Sims right now as it stands, you’ll pull off the unexpected win but you’re also going to have to deal with the mistakes causing winnable games to become losers.

As I said above, Sims maturity will either show the next 6 games or it will not. We’d better hope for the best because this is the horse we’re going to be riding. We have nothing behind him except for a recruit that’s 2 more years away probably from being ready. Peery has disappeared & must be a bust because nobody’s talking abut him. That kid from Temple will only take a snap in an emergency. IIWII.
There is no reason to dismiss Perry at this point. He did not have a senior HS season. He needs time to develop.

This staff hypes EVERYTHING. The fact there’s radio silence on him & he’s our 4th best option is not encouraging. Obviously I’m speculating. That being said, burning a redshirt year by taking a snap for a dinged QB like we’ve done before is idiotic. Hope we’re just roster managing & Peery is not a bust. We need either him or Sims to elevate.

I think Yates is a very capable backup. I do not think he possesses the athleticism this team needs right now to win games. If he had a better OL then perhaps things are different but right now we need a QB who can make people miss and extend plays with his legs. Sims is still very young and will make mistakes, but his upside is much higher this year and beyond.

On his 2nd INT yesterday I was pissed we even threw it. It was 3rd and 17 and the chances of something good happening there were slim. I thought we should've just run a draw or screen and punted and forced Duke to go 90 yds in a minute. Instead we threw and got the INT. I think that decision was poor all around (execution and coaching). Luckily it didn't lead to points for Duke, but we should still be protecting the young QB in that scenario and we didn't.

Nobody knows jack about Perry, so you assuming he will never pan out is ridiculous.

The next 6 games yes, but give or take some depending on the offensive line play.

Sims ability + experience could be very exciting in the next couple years. Give him a OL that can block, and D that can be average, and winning should be more consistent. Bagging Sims was a big feather in Collins cap. Collins can recruit skill guys very well. I’d like to see him bag some big nasties also.

There’s a coaching element here that remains to be seen. CGC has improved recruiting immensely, but QB and DL are still concerning. Being basically 1 deep at QB is not exactly tearing it up, DL is tougher to solve so what he’s done there is not bad, just not what we need. From my perspective, he needs 2 QBs each class until he has a 3 deep to progress and develop.

2019 he hung onto Yates, not his type of guy, but the best he could do that year.

2020 he bagged Sims and Gleason. Good numbers, good 1st choice but 2nd choice Gleason was not really gonna make it. If you watched any Plant football with him at the helm you know why. Not surprising he’s gone.

2021 he got Peery. I thought this kid was going to turn heads. Not start, but be probably #2 ATL. Maybe he is, but no hype of any sort since he got on campus? Maybe he’s guarded like the nuclear football used to be?

2020 we got a line on Pyron. Hopefully he’s a pyro and burns it up. I’d like to see a 2nd competitive QB This class. Maybe it’s too much to ask because we have zero history of developing QBs.

Has Goober or Collins ever put a QB into the NFL? Surely one of the fanboys must know.

First on the last question, no and there hasn't been much opportunity to. Collins was a DC before, so the only chance of putting a QB into the NFL before was his 2 years at Temple. Patenaude had more time but all of that was at Coastal Carolina, where getting a QB into the NFL would of been a pretty huge deal.

I think we have been improving recruiting on DL over time, seems to have a gaggle of good players in this years class that make me want to see what that unit looks like in 2 years.

I think Peery not playing that final year of HS football has slowed him a bit. No necessarily due to his lack of effort, but our coaches not rushing him into gameplay

To put it a different way. Had Peery come in last season and Sims been the recruit this season, I feel like Peery would be starting and folks would be excited about Sims taking over someday.

FWIW. I think Sims is going to be very good after the bye week. I think he will be a top ACC QB, if not the top, next season

I think Peery will take over after Sims and we keep rolling good QBs

Volume is pretty close; though competition has been different:

Sims
50-80 Passing; 791 Yards; 6 TDs; 4 INTs; 9.9 YPA; 63% Completion
38 rushes for 255 Rushing; 4 TDs; 6.7 YPC

Yates
52-81 Passing; 613 Yards; 5 TDs; 1 INT; 7.5 YPA; 64% Completion
35 rushes for 43 Rushing Yards; 1 TD; 1.2 YPC
Interesting statistics. But not even close. Sims is much more capable, bigger, stronger and faster athlete.

Sims has not had very good coaching. He tries to force passes that aren’t there. That’s a common inexperienced mistake that should be corrected.

Point blank, we don't win that game with Yates. Sorry to break whatever fantasy we're in here. Both picks had guys in the QB's face and were forced quick throws. One of them should've taken the sack, the other was a bad play by the receiver.
One of those had a wr open over the middle. Ok both picks Sims appeared to lock onto a receiver right after the snap.

Yates isn't just a game manager; he's a better at making reads and lower risk through the air.

Not that it matters; the staff won't let the backup take a couple series after the starter throws near back to back picks....im not sure competition is king.

He isn't better at making reads, he's slower through his progressions and doesn't get the ball out on time. He's a good option if we had a better line and better receivers. We don't.

Yes, because Sims is a far better player and yanking around QBs constantly makes zero sense. Watch the first few games of the 2019 season again to see why "letting the backup take a couple series" doesn't work.

Exactly.
Some of our fans think Yates is good at making reads and managing the game because he runs backwards in the pocket and flails it out of bounds. Never seen a fan base get their dicks so hard over QB throw aways and check downs; and bash the QB that stands in, and steps up in the pocket to make throws downfield.

We were at the 43, so a 10-12 yard out puts us on the edge of FG territory. Normally a throw like that outside the numbers is pretty safe, and you would not expect the corner to squat on aroute 5-7 yards short of the sticks.
Wasn’t a good throw, and poor job by our WR not fighting back through the ball, but the play call seemed sound (would have preferred it going to Carter).

It was a slow-motion train wreck because the potential negative outcome far outweighed the likelihood of something good happening. I would've run a QB draw to try to get the 10 yards over putting a young QB in that position. Momentum was already starting to shift at that point and playing it safe would not have been a bad play there protecting a 17-14 lead going into the half.

For some fans comes down to the turnovers. Some fans thinks Yates is less likely to turn the ball over. I think one of our former coaches coined the adage "Gentlemen, it is better to have died as a small boy than to fumble this football" and I think he would have felt the same about INTs. Sims definitely has the better physical tools to be the better QB in a couple of years. I hope we have a coaching staff that can coach him up. He could benefit greatly from knowing when to throw it away instead of trying to force a throw that isn't there.
