Now I know this has been discussed, but anyone got some info on who's replacing our seniors on the DL? Just asking in case anyone knows more than espn or AJC deigns to tell us.

as of now....it would be Derrick Morgan/Robert Hall at DE and Ben Anderson/TJ Barnes at DT. Look for Logan Walls (DT), Jason Peters(DE), Anthony Egbuniwe (DE), Antonio Wilson (DE), and JC Lanier (DT) to press for PT.

Has Antonio Wilson put on the pounds yet? I saw him listed as a recruit at about 220lbs.

I'm certainly no insider, but from what I've heard, the coaching staff is VREY impressed with Barnes at DT. Morgan (DE) will be the obvious starter and I hear Jason Peters (DE) has impressed. Logan Walls and Lanier will be the frontrunners for the last DT spot. Just rumors, but that's I've heard.

Same here. I don't think we regress too much on DL. In fact, I think DL will continue to be one of our stronger units. The question will be whether the LBs and secondary step up.

I think we will regress, because this last line was awesome, but I don't think it will show. Our lb and db play will improve, taking the pressure off. Better linebacking often means more plays by the line.

Dude, I read on the Hive we're going to be even better on the DL. The new guys are GAP FILLERS! They are BIG! I'm talking S-P-A-C-E---E-A-T-E-R-S!!! Damnonejustraninmyofficeandatemyspacebar!!!!!111.

Darryl Richardson was ok, but he's more of a brain type. Michael Johnson was just tall. Anyaibe? I bet you don't even know what his first name is.

Those guys aren't exactly bums but we're going to be much better with the guys backing them up this year. I heard that new guys are going to lift weights and might try to get older and more experienced in the off season. Don't tell anyone about that last part less other teams try it!

I hope you are right....but there were several times this year when the second team line would come in and the other team would run it right up our a$$.
They definately will improve with experience and strength. I think D. Morgan will draw double teams which will help. However, I think the d-line will drop off some in '09, especially at the beginning of the year.

I think kirbee was being sarcastic, and I'm not sure why.

I think our DB will be really good next season. We'll have Burnett, who is great when he doesn't have to cover for his teammates as well as his own territory. Cooper Taylor and Rashaad Reid will get better. Remember they were both true freshman starting in the middle of the season because of injuries. And I wouldn't be surprised if they show big improvement now that they'll be serious contenders for starter positions (last season they were new guys behind the likes of Burnett and Word-Daniels). I think if our LBs can step up a bit and our DL can show maturity I think our D will be as potent as it was at the beginning of last season.

By the way, what is all this I'm hearing about TJ Barnes? I hear "good things" but no one seems to know what those things are.

Cooper Taylor and Rashaad Reid will get better.
Yeah, but they could get a lot better and still not be very good. They were pressed into service far too early, and were abused quite a bit. I give full props for the big play vs FSU, but our secondary looked wretched the second half of the season.

I remember in 2000 when we were all gawking about how many defensive starters we had returning, but we'd conveniently forgotten how terrible our defense was the previous year. Returning starters is only a good thing when the starters returning were good to begin with.

As far as the secondary's concerned, I'm more excited about the possibility that other folks will come in and beat Coop and Reid out for the starting spots. I'm not hating on them, and I do hope they get better, but having them back and starting isn't something to get overly excited about IMO.

By the way, what is all this I'm hearing about TJ Barnes? I hear "good things" but no one seems to know what those things are.
One "good thing" I heard was that he was essentially unblockable on the scout team, and abused our OL all year long in practice.

Granted, that's not exactly hard to do, but it's still a good sign.

I still refuse to place any serious expectations on the Jackes till 2010... last year was an awesome surprise... call me a pessimist but if you had told me in July that we would win 9 games and play(or at least make an appearance) in the Peach Bowl I would have passed out laughing. We will have to work hard just so we dont digress. The way some people are talking seems like if we win 8 games and dont go to the ACCCG, it will be a disappointment. And no my real name isnt Dave Braine(less) I just think we need to be more realistic about the fact that our D was never as super down the stretch as it appeared to be early on against a bunch of poor offensive teams. And I dont want to hear about how Word-Daniels being healthy would have shored up our D. Anyone remember his 07 season? No he isnt Pat Clarke but he aint Willie Clay either.

Whatever beej67. Let me lay out for you how it works in REAL LIFE bub.

Proof

Time is money, therefore:
(1) Time = Money.

Money is good to have, therefore:
(2) Money = Good.

Combining (1) and (2):

(3) Time = Good.

Finally, we can conclude that:

Marginal Player + Time = Good Player

Pwned. You can't argue math either.

Money is the root of all evil; therefore Money = Evil;
Evil is the opposite of Good so Evil = Bad;
Combining your 1 and my 2,3
Time = Bad ;)

Corollary to the Proof: The Reggie Ball Regression

Proof
Reggie Ball, AJ Suggs, Bilbo and Taylor Bennett were the only starting QBs coached by Chan Gailey at Tech. They all sucked, even more so as the season went on. Hence,

Marginal QB + Time + Chan Gailey = Bad QB

Nesbitt received only a few slivers of the poison, which was responsible for the LSU game. Given enough antidote (PT with CPJ), he may recover.

Got to love the Transitive Property of Bull****, especially when applied to college football.

And Beej, I think I saw some decent potential in Reid and Taylor, I know it isn't Burnett potential but I don't think they sucked as bad. However, I will say I'm an amateur so you can just pretend its the wind your hearing.

yes but Bad can mean Good (as in that is BAD ASS, meaning good ass)
so Bad = Good
so Anything = Anything
isnt math with a false assumption fun!

I thought Cooper Taylor did a fantastic job last season. IMO, he's the surest tackler on the team (about the only guy I saw who was able to tackle Peerman). Not very strong, but his form is terrific. Great nose for the football and get there in a hurry.

Freshman mistakes? Sure. It's tough to walk out of the HS game and into a college secondary.

Cooper was NOT forced into action. The staff couldn't keep him off the field. He was a co-starter from the get-go.

I thought our secondary played well until Jahi went down. Losing your best cover corner is hard. For a freshman Reid filled in admirably.

Just my opinion--I think our secondary is young and has a big upside.

You guys fail at math.

Money is the root of all evil, therefore:

Money = sqrt(evil)

(money)^2 = evil

As previously shown:
Money = Time

Evil = Time^2

Evil = Bad

Bad = Bad ASS

Therefore:

Marginal player + Time^2 = Bad Ass Player

So in 2010 our players will be Bad Ass.

Also, let me freek you people out a li'l more with my mathefactics.

If Bad Ass = Bad = Evil, then Bad Ass = Time^2

Everyone knows that Times Square is in NYC and Jonathan Dwyer was ACC POTY, therefore:

Jonathan Dwyer = Bad Ass

Bad Ass ACC POTY + Time^2 = Jonathan Dwyer Heisman Trophy in 2010.

*BOOOM* Ur mind was blowed.

Again, don't even mess with my mathefactics. You will lose.

I predict Lanier will need a redshirt to change body composition and get stronger.

IMO, TJ Barnes, Anderson, & Walls will be a three man rotation. If someone gets hurt, some strong/slightly undersized player (Peters? Cross? Morgan?) will have to log minutes at DT, like Adamm Oliver had to do.

On third downs I could see bringing in A Wilson as pass rushing specialist and letting Morgan or Peters rush from one tackle spot. I think Hall is going to be an animal and would have started on many other teams last year.
