UCLA declines Chick-fil-a Kickoff gm vs GT

Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Louisiana, and Texas are the actual hotbeds.

The mindset of those raised in California is not one that combines to establish sound chemistry, followed by national prominence. USC will always lose to an Oregon State year in, year out, with obscene talent. Why?

California

GT lost to three teams worse than Oregon St.

LSU worse than Oregon State?

Funniest thing I've heard in a while

Hmm, and Florida, GA, SC, Alabama, LSU and Texas all had undefeated seasons last year, right? Oh, no -- they lost to someone inferior to them (well, actually hard to find a worse team than USCeast--so maybe they did not lose to an inferior team). Well, obviously 2 years ago, they all had undefeated seasons. Wait, no I am wrong again-- they all lost to someone inferior. Ah, 3 years ago -- yeah they were all undefeated that year, oh wait, I am wrong again -- they all lost to someone inferior to them.

Dude, most teams lose to someone every year. Hell, I bet CPJ would drool if he could have a lock of a pipeline for college recruits out of California. If you look at rankings (Scout.com), right now California has 3 5-star recruits, and 30 4-star. Florida has 3 5-star and 20 4-star. GA has 1 5-star. California has talent -- maybe not as much per capita as the South -- but the overwhelming number of students makes up the difference.

And if you are going to bash USC and its talent population, look at how they do in non-conference games. Look at USC's BCS record 6-1 with 7 appearances.

LOL. Just shows how little you know about Paul. "Why would I go out and recruit a kid in California when I've got 50 to 100 prospects of equal or greater talent within the city limits?" A Georgia three star is more prepared than a California four or five star because of his inherent toughness and because of the greater competition he faced in high school. Sticking to the State, quoting Paul, will "break all ties." Couldn't agree more with Coach. California kids wouldn't bode well with Paul. Most of 'em would either quit or get thrown off the team.

Paul and I are gonna stick it to ole' Georgia. We don't care about no dun California.

Do you really think CPJ would turn down a recruiting pipeline to California if there was one? No. I agree with his point now, in that there is no upside to trying to develop one, as there is plenty of talent here -- but to say California is weak on talent is laughable at best.

Really?? Really? Hmm, let us see if the NFL agrees with your belief here. After all, if GA players are so tough, there should be more of them in the pros than California kids.

Hmm, damn, California has more than twice the number of NFL athletes as GA. How can that be if GA players are so tough? Again, maybe per capita we have better players, but there are 2 million students in high school in California (http://www.ed-data.k12.ca.us/Navigation/fsTwoPanel.asp?bottom=%2Fprofile.asp%3Flevel%3D04%26reportNumber%3D16).

California, Texas, and Florida far and away produce the most NFL football players as should be expected based on population. California is always between 180 and 205 players in the NFL. Texas and Florida are both usually between 165 and 185. the next closest state to these three is normally Georgia, which is somewhere around 80-85 players. The highest total per capita among the top producers appears to be Mississippi with currently 47 players and a population under 3 million, followed very closely by Louisiana with over 60 players and a population of less than 4.5 million.

1. California, 246 (makes for 12.2% of NFL)
2. Florida, 225 (11.2%)
3. Texas, 208 (10.3%)
4. Georgia, 107 (5.3%)
5. Ohio, 107 (5.3%)

Two California high schools – De La Salle in Concord and Long Beach Polytechnic in Long Beach -- top the list of high schools with the most 2007 NFL players with six each.
The totals are based on the 1,693-man 2007 NFL Kickoff Weekend rosters (September 6, 9-10).
NFL players from Kickoff rosters hail from 1,384 high schools in 48 states and the District of Columbia, three foreign countries and one U.S. territory (American Samoa).
Two high schools – DeMatha Catholic in Hyattsville, Maryland and Dillard in Fort Lauderdale, Florida – had five players apiece on Kickoff rosters.

I'm referring to mindsets. They aint tough enough. All the best football is in the South this generation. See: The past three National Champions. It's gonna be a team out of the South every year.

California is a 'hotbed of talent' simply because it's freaking huge. It's the geographical equivilent of lumping Maryland, Virginia, NC, SC, and Georgia, into the same state and crediting that megastate with all recruits that come out of it.

BuzzMD: Don't bother. He's just baiting you. It's not worth looking up statistics and crap. Just call him an idiot and move on :).

Had a great talk with Drad last night. Here's the problem. No one will play us. Look for a couple of high profile teams in the near future to back out on us. They have much too much too lose.

My point entirely. I still argue that per capita, the South has more recruits (and probably better) recruits, but California is HUGE. And that was my point entirely.

GTH, sorry for arguing with him. When I see someone state something ridiculous, I have an uncontrollable urge to respond. I will not post any more regarding the topic.

That's sad to hear but not especially surprising. I wonder if we make some bank on these back outs.

Do you have a idea of what DRad is looking to replace those games with? Or more in general what his philosophy on the "lets play the best teams vs the lets try to go undefeated by playing cupcakes" debate?

Haha.

We definitely need to force the backouts to pay out the nose, then.

I wonder if big, bad USCw would venture back over to the East Coast... They have no problem feeding on ACC bottom-feeders, but I'm curious as to how they'd react to being offered a matchup against us.

Part of me says they'd be too proud to turn anyone down, but part of me believes they'd realize that it is a perfect trap game.

I bet they'd do it. I don't think they are afraid to play anyone, as evidenced by Ohio State last year. Would certainly be one hell of a fun game, and a great road trip for Jackets fans when we went out to the west coast to play them. Problem is I doubt we'd do it because, not to get into another OOC strength schedule discussion, but I don't think we are looking for a team of that caliber to play.

Not so sure I would call Virginia a bottom feeder, at least when the game was scheduled. Not sure when the game was scheduled, but in 2007, they were 2nd in the coastal, 2006 3rd in coastal, 2005 5th (bad), and in 2004, they were 4th in the conference.

They will be playing Boston College in 2013 in Boston. http://usctrojans.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/usc-m-footbl-futurescheds.html

Problem is that the backouts from the high profile teams, we do have them in place but it's not enough to penalize the team for dropping the game. It's a drop in the bucket to some.

No one will want to play us in the middle of the season for sure, very few if any will want to play the first game of the season as well. I would look forward to playing mid level teams in the future unless someone surprises us.

We went out there and kicked their butt in 1961.
