Mother of God

Sounds about right. It will be interesting to see if we actually sell out games like Jacksonville State this year, or if people are still coming to see the opponents more than they are seeing our team. We certainly have a good team to come see.

Fairly honest and straightforward, as far as I'm concerned. Especially considering it's Jeff Schultz - he is usually grasping for smirking one-liners throughout his articles.

True, but quoting the attendance numbers at Spring Practice? Really, was that necessary - and mentioning the UGA game being televised?

It smacks of "Oh yeah, well _____________! Nyah *stick out tongue*"

One of the commenters nailed it I think in that this is to give Tech some negative press to compensate for all the negative press UGA has gotten lately.

I'm with you. Sure, a lot of what he said was true, but the way he said it. Are we really looking towards the Spring Game numbers to determine who has the best programs? Which game was televised, and which game has no desire to even be televised.

Sure, there are more gold butts needed at BDS. But building up a fanbase in a state where a lot of people have already decided long ago isn't going to happen over night. Tech has to remain competitive and do it with some stability. The numbers will come I believe, but there is no such thing as "instant gratification" when it comes to building a sidewalk fanbase.

Meh, I would rather be a fan somewhere where you actually care about the school and have a connection then be a fan of a school that takes $5 and your nearest Wal-Mart to join.

I was kind of pissed at first, but was anything he said really off-base? We may end up being the better program, but we will never sell out a 96k stadium EVERY game of the season. I mean, we do have trouble selling out the 56k stadium we currently have.

That said, it still sucks that it was written.

USCe sells out every game with very rabid fans (any of you ever been there?). It reflects far less on the quality of the program, than it does the location.

This article presents nothing new. What's the old story, there are more UGA alum in metropolitan Atlanta then there are GT alum across the U.S. --something like that anyway. The UGA fan base is comprised of scores of non-alum that not only did not attend UGA, they did not attend college period. Not only does GT not have the same size fan base in the area, they do not have near the same size of non-alum fans. Have to say I am surprised that the season ticket base sits at 24K right now --expected that number to be a bit higher.

I grew up a Tech fan, and even though I am not an alum (but a UGA alum no less) I am a season ticket holder. I have long-time friends who grew up Tech fans, are alum of other schools, still live in the area, but are not season ticket holders --and they rarely attend games.

There is a large potential fan base in Atlanta. Is location a problem? I more times than not take marta into games, which is convenient, but I don't get to enjoy the pre-game atmosphere and tailgating. Seriously thinking about driving in some this season.

I am friends with a couple of Tech alums in my neighborhood. Both have sons, families of four, attended the CFA bowl, attended no games @ BDS, and are well off financially. I was talking with one of them this past weekend, telling him about moving my season tix into a non-Tech fund area for this season. I was doing all I could to encourage him to get on RamblinWreck.com and order season tix. He and his son watch Tech on tv, but they don't go to games --I just don't get it.

I love the atmosphere @ BDS, it a great place for college football. Can you imagine the stadium being packed for each and every game? I'm confident that the product on the field will warrant such. Hopefully, giving it a couple of years, winning consistently (as well as beating the in-state rival) will not only draw from the potential non-alum fan base in the area, it will encourage Tech alum --like my two neighbors-- to buy tickets.

This is the article for a fanbase that is very afraid. Since a team full of criminals, degenerates, and illiterates makes it difficult to defend yourself in any manner, now all they have is "we have a bigger stadium".

I think recent graduates would actually like there to be fewer trailer park owners excited about shelling out $2G a year for tickets.

We should have never expanded the stadium for O'Leary.

Disagree totally. The new stadium is a much better atmosphere, we just need to start beating Georgia.

If we'da taken 50/50 vs Georgia since the new stadium was built, we'd have a lot more people wearing Tech colors in the stands. Pure and simple, the solution to all our woes is to beat Georgia, and beat Georgia a lot.

Atlanta is full of UGA fans, but it's also full of UGA haters. How could it not be? It's the hub of the SEC, and the rest of the SEC hates Georgia. It's full of northerners who've moved south, and they all hate Georgia. It's ripe for an explosion of Tech fans. We just have to BEAT GEORGIA.

I started my current job about two years ago fresh out of college. Being a Tech fan, I always seek out other Tech fans to chat with or whatever. I noticed a guy my age (25) at work had a Tech sticker on the back of his truck. He wasnt an Alum (went to College of Charlston) but he was a 'good ole boy'. Which surprised me considering he was country AND a sidewalk fan. He seemed like a diehard Tech fan. Anyways, he eventually took another job and I didnt see him until about this last summer. I was at Rosa Mexicana and I see him next to the bar wearing a UGA hat. I was like, "What the HELL Matt?!!?" His response..."Man, I just cant take the losing. Seven in a row is too much to take and it ain't gonna stop anytime soon." Without saying another word, I picked up my corona and just walked away without another word. I cant wait to run into him again. Beating UGAy will help our fanbase expand. People want to cheer for winners. Winning will help our fanbase grow especially with the sidewalk fans.

I'm going to disagree with your disagreeing. If we'd beat UGA more often, Chan Gailey would also still be our football coach. If God made me three feet taller, I'd be in the NBA. But he didn't. Tech made an investment and hasn't seen any return on it. It also made the north stands ugly, in my opinion. This is probably more important to me then it should be.

Now that we've got a football coach who's personal Kryptonite isn't made of Mark Richt, we should see many converts from Atlanta start to fill up Bobby Dodd. Until then though, I'm going to call the stadium expansion a bad idea.

You're not alone AK --I've felt this way since the day I saw the expansion of the north stands. Of course I'm also bothered that Wardlaw isn't centered with the field --so I do have my issues.

First, let me say that I think that the article, though accurate, is futile. I don’t think that it is in the best interest of a company, which is suffering the way the AJC is, to alienate potential customers, no matter how few the numbers may be. Honestly, I would have never seen this article had it not been posted on StingTalk because I don’t bother reading the AJC’s rubbish anymore…that is not limited to Tech Sports either. The paper is just not very good.

Second, other than money for the AA, I could care less about the numbers. I do wish to fill the stadium every week and think that it is absurd that we cannot, but I don’t care if we are outnumbered a million to one in the city or the state. No, we don’t have as many sidewalk fans and I don’t want them if they are going to change hats every few years. Now, some of the most hardcore fans that I know are sidewalk fans and that is awesome, but these individuals do not change sides when time are rough…they may not renew their season tickets, but they don’t change sides.

I think that the exclusiveness is part of what is special about being a Tech fan. The family environment and the instant comradely with fellow Jackets is something that will always be special to me. You can’t walk through a grocery store without acknowledging the guy in the checkout aisle with his GT hat on or answering with a smile when someone asks you “What’s the Good Word?” I love being a Tech fan and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Hear, hear! When I was driving back from NYC this weekend, I noticed an older gentleman at the rest area somewhere in Pennsylvania with a GT polo on so I greeted him with "What's the Good Word?". It was great.
