It is still very plausible for us to beat UNC and VPI, while Miami loses at VPI. There is a lot of football to be played.

Miami torched us, but we were clearly an exhausted team playing on the road. We can make a comeback and still go to the Orange Bowl.

It's still quite possible that we can beat VPI and UNC, and if we can beat those two then the rest of our division is crap.

I think we lose to FSU in Doak though, so we need Miami to pick up 2 ACC losses, which I don't see happening.

Meh, I said at the beginning of the season I expected 9 wins. After Miami it looks more like 8. /shrug

Here's what I want to know (among other things):

How does Jacory Harris react when he finally gets pressured and hit a few times? How does Miami respond when they have to change their offensive gameplan, which to this point has been, "sit in the pocket for 7 seconds and then throw the ball to wide open guys streaking down the field."

Who is going to do this? Right now, I don't see any ACC team that will force them to change.

In the similar sense that we can't tell if Miami could've stopped our offense because we couldn't run it worth of crap, we can't tell what Miami's offense would look like in a difficult situation because, well, they haven't faced one.

What I want to know is who in the ACC is good enough to do that to them?

You think Oklahoma is going to be able to pressure him?

At the beginning of the season I said 8-4 and and that might still be possible. But unless Thursday was some kind of aberration I can't see us clawing back into the divisional picture.

I think the time will come when the Great Jacory "Heisman" Harris is having a bad day, and yes, I think Oklahoma and Va Tech will be able to pressure him more than he's been pressured so far. And he might be able to deal with it and get the Canes to 4-0. I'll believe it when I see it.

I hate the word "should" because it f***s up everyone's heads.

Miami SHOULD beat all of their ACC opponents, just like VT was supposed to last year.

VT lost to 3 opponents, same as GT, and we lost to VT our third game into the season.

It's still possible for GT to get the Coastal. I think Miami is gonna get a loss and then slip back into mediocrity. Don't act like they've already clinched it...

FSU has a pretty good DL and Harris still threw for 386 yards against them.

Shouldn't we want to be good ourselves and not let others do our work for us?
That having been said, this is plausible, but not necessarily desirable. Oklahoma is talented enough to pressure Harris, give him some hits and change his thinking about being cozy in the pocket. He might even get dinged. Miami has no depth at QB and could find themselves in a tenuous situation for two or three games this fall. But isn't that where we were last year? We didn't beat VPI when we had the chance, lost to UNC and UVA in what turned out to be crucial in-division losses. Then, not getting the job done ourselves, we were praying for somebody, anybody to beat VPI so we could crown ourselves champs. The "playoff system" already exists in a way. We lost in the first the round and have been assigned to the losers' bracket.

I'll take success however I can get it. :P

I'll buy that. The chances of us making an ACCCG are very, very slim right now. But we're still a very young team, and we've still got a pretty good chance of winning 9 this year, which will mean back to back 9 win seasons for the first time in my memory. If we can go 9 wins with a bunch of teenagers, then 9 wins with a bunch of slightly older teenagers, then the following year (Nesbitt and Dwyer's senior years) starts to look pretty promising.

I don't see anyone on our team going pro early at this rate, which will make 2010 pretty good. :)

Derrick Morgan is on track for a day 1 pick if you ask me.

+1 -- maybe their OL is that good?? Both FSU and us did not lay a finger on him.
FSU did, Harris was actually shaken up at one point.

I just checked the stats for the game, couldn't find sacks but Harris threw 2 interceptions.

Looking at the two good games FSU had (Miami and BYU), they are as good as Miami I think.

Does Miami play Clemson this year? If so the Tigers DL might be able to pressure Jacory.

Clemson @ Miami is October 24.

Did not realize this until just now but Miami plays the exact same slate of Atlantic teams we do: Clemson, FSU and Wake.

Perhaps, then Miami can lose to VT next week and then to Clemson in October, since both have the defenses that might be able to put pressure on Jacory (UNC's would be less likely to IMO). If we were to win out we'd have the tie breaker over everyone else in our division, BUT I don't see that happening UNLESS our offense gets a lot better quickly, ie folks learn to block and Josh improves with his option reads and his passing (the latter improved a little from Clemson to Miami). EVEN THEN, with our lack of defense, we might be hard pressed to outscore F$U in Tallahassee.
