Maybe I'm behind a little bit, but I'm pretty sure the fact that Boyd cut GT got Zenon the offer.

Perhas not incredibly recent, but still true.

Not true. Boyd cut Tech because he's family wanted him to honor his word to Vandy. The ship is still open to Boyd.
 
No. Zenon was getting the offer either way. He was already scheduled to come on the official before Boyd canceled.
 
According to many, we have more scholarships open, but may hold them until next year, unless a surprise pops up.

I thought I read that scholarships are actually for one year and then renewed for each following year, etal. If this is the case, then there is no reason to withhold a scholarship offer to Zenon if the coaches think he is worth a chance.

If he is on scholarship for his first year and proves he is a great player and can help the team, then it was worth the scholarship. If he does not live up to his billing, then there is nothing lost.

If scholarships are for one year only, and Zenon did not pan out, then he could probably transfer to the same system at Georgia Southern after his first year here. Since we may be saving scholarships for next year, then his would still be available for next year.

So, for Zenon, who might not be able to walk on (financially), he would attend free for the first year, and we can see how he works out at several positions.

Some have indicated he might be used as a kick-off returner (possibly a punt returner) and maybe a good candidate for the A Back position.

I don't really see where there is a loss in this situation. It appears to be one of those win-win situations for both Zenon and Tech, and possibly Georgia Southern.

There were 2 scholarships still open, one for Boyd (who cancelled his visit and will stick with his Vanderbilt commitment) and one for Zenon (which he accepted today). The reason Boyd and Zenon came into play is because some guys the staff had targeted ahead of them, more based on position need and not necessarily raw football potential, did not pan out for a variety of reasons.

So we still have one ship out there that we can choose to use or to defer until 2011. I am sure there are a couple of guys the staff is still working but at this late date, a breakthrough is probably unlikely.

Think of recruiting like selecting a new football coach. Every AD has a list of prospective candidates in their top drawer. They have them prioritized one through ten let's say. They know they may not get their top choice but they also know that any of the 10 on their list can do the job.

The coaches establish a similar list. They look at their needs by position and prioritize those needs. They have a target number of players they like and want to go after by position. If they need 2 linebackers, they probably have at least 10 they think could contribute but I am sure they rank order them and go after the top 2 the hardest but work the other 8 as well knowing they may not get the top 2. And so on.

What you see at the end is that they have exhausted their efforts on their primary targets based on position of need. That puts them into a mode of taking the best athlete available regardless of position. That is why guys like Boyd and Zenon have now worked their way onto the offer list. I am sure the staff knows we need a Defensive Nose Guard or a Linebacker, more than we need anothr A Back, but they have come to a point where they know it is time to take the best athlete available and Zenon fits that criteria.

P.S. Don't read any of these boards from this point on, nobody else is happy to have you. You won't be treated like any of the other "worthy" recruits because you played in a bad conference and didn't have enough offers. Every other recruit got a "welcome to the flats" except you and I think it is a shame.
 
Nice. He seems rather small, but that's not really an issue for me. Actually, he kind of reminds me of Jerry Mays, size-wise...except Jerry was actually shorter and 20 lbs heavier.. Good pick up.

Based on his size, cutting characteristics, speed and apparent ability to break some tackles, he reminds me a little of Noel Devine from WV (originally from here in SW FL). Devine had been a strength / body building freak since his freshman year in high school to partially offset his size limitations against the level of competition he faced here even then, and has continued it through his 3 years at WV. It seems to work pretty well for him.
 
I believe this is a very good pick up for Tech. Who cares about size. I like football players and he is a football player. Welcome to the Tech Nation.
