per WaPo...

an interesting hire. I wonder if they are really paying him the 2.5mil that was rumored.

We'll see how well his fancy offense works with Vanderbilt talent. Prediction: 8 losses.

wow, pretty good hire for Vandy, an exciting and risky choice. I hope it works out and they get to beating uga soon!

this guy was coaching high school 6 years ago. i wish him good luck, but i wonder if he has the true experience at the college level to lead a program - even one like Vandy.

Is it known if he is sticking around for the national championship game?

Hrmmm.

I can understand leaving your OC position for a HC at a smaller school...but why do it now, when your current team is about to play for a MNC?

Because he has to start recruiting. It's not like the rest of America's coaches are sitting on their asses right now waiting for the champ game to be finished.

Wow. I knew he wouldn't be long at Auburn. But Vandy? Interesting choice. Good hire for Vandy...I think.

PS - with no Malzahn and no Newton next year, I wonder how ol Cheezit is going to do. Wonder if they will sign him to a 7 year rolling contract?

No Fairley either. I would be surprised if Auburn wins more than 7 next season

pretty good hire...

especially if you call yourself Vanderbilt.

And did you know??? ... that Vanderbilt's "Chancelor" (glorified AD) has full access to Vanderbilt's endowment? If DRAD had that ability, we'd be going fu*king gangbusters right now (in both sports).

If you're Vanderbilt, than this is a great hire. If you're Gus Malzahn, what the hell are you thinking???? Vanderbilt is a great school, but it is a dead end job. He might improve things, but if he doesn't do enough, he'll get passed over for countless jobs. He should have stayed at Auburn. He could have waited for someone else to come calling.

You're probably right. Sounds like he acknowledges that Newton is the reason his offense looks so good. If he sticks around and his offense tanks, he probably isn't getting any calls at all.

The reason he went to Vandy is exactly what AC/DC sung, "Money Talks":

http://espn.go.com/blog/sec/post/_/id/17825/vanderbilt-prepared-to-pay-big-money

"While no offer has been officially extended, Vanderbilt is putting together a package that would place Malzahn's salary in the upper half of SEC coaches, which is saying something when you consider what those guys made this season.

According to a recent USA Today study, Ole Miss' Houston Nutt was the sixth highest paid coach in the SEC this season and earned $2,509,000. The package for Malzahn could exceed that figure."

Wait, do we know Newton is gone? I thought he still had eligibility left. I don't really see how he projects to the NFL, I mean he is crazy athletic but unless he's taken as a QB he wouldn't be taken early. Then again, I might of said similar about Tebow (though still, some might say his oddly high draft was part of what knocked Denver's coach out).

lol, I read that and just get the feeling that Vandy's AD just decided "hell, lets try our hand at football" and threw a bunch of money up there.

You're right, they're not.

But HE should be. Well, he should be prepping for the game anyway.

IMO a month of recruiting is not worth risking a potential MNC win on your resume.

Kind of like Brian Kelly. Gave up a BCS bowl to recruit for ND. I'd say there are decent odds he's fired from ND before he gets a chance to sniff a BCS bowl there.

If the money rumors are true, I doubt he gives a **** about missing a potential MNC. He just hit the jackpot.

Building Vandy into a respectable program will be a much bigger accomplishment than winning one more game at Auburn that is potentially to be erased anyway.
