The Seminole Tribe of Florida has endorsed the usage of the chief for FSU. They are the only school to get an exemption from the NCAA ban on Indian mascots.

I've always wondered how many Seminole kids get scholarships to FSU in return for this endorsment.

It may be because it honors their heritage. I have part Cherokee in my linage and I think it is an honor for a school to use them as a masscot.
