How does Stanford do it?

Ranked #8 with a 10-2 regular season.

Meanwhile... tied for #6 academically (with MIT) by US News & World Report, and a student body of just under 7000.

I don't get how they manage to be successful both on the field and in the classroom. Is it that the PAC-12 as a whole is far more mediocre than the teams we face? Is there a vastly different set of standards between their students and their athletes? Does their distinction as a private university vs. a public one grant them certain benefits that other institutions do not have access to?

What?

(A bit envious of the tree at the moment.)

They have a much larger selection of majors, ones that are more amiable to student athletes.

Stanford has ups and downs just like we do. They've been solid over the last few years, but we've been much more successful over the long term.

And, they don't actually "do it". Look at their long term record. They win big with Heisman type QBs every blue moon---so do we.

Did Stanford boards have "how does GT do it?" threads when we finished the regular season ranked #9 at 10-2?

In the real world:

Stanford > GT >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> poly

Whine more.
Whine about what? I stated the obvious and so did you. Kids would practically kill to get into Stanford....GT...not so much.....Poly....not at all.....Stanford is a school that billionaires want their kids to attend...GT.....not so much.....Poly....none....

This was valid for last few years, but it's not valid anymore. Shaw and his staff are recruiting and coaching very well. Their recruiting has only been better and they are sustaining success without Luck and several other NFL picks they previously had. Shaw is a Stanford grad, so might stay there for long. As long as he stays there, they will be at least ok. Until he starts not getting good talent, we have to assume they are a good program from now on.

Didn't we get Young after he didn't qualify for Stanford? Stanford got several guys we were recruiting (and offered). They have been doing a good job recruiting given their academic restrictions.

Stanford athletic budget = 81m
Tech athletic budget = 59m
While that is definitely important, I think the recipe is finding a good coach who loves the school and can sell the school to recruits. Shaw is a Stanford grad with a lot of NFL experience.

Their degrees aren't that different from ours when you boil it down. Their business degree includes a lot of the same courses we take, CS included. The difference?

During our finals week we are stuck in the library. During theirs, everyone is in swimsuits on the quad hanging out and playing games. Difficulty and intensity of class assignment schedules there is less than Tech.

Sanford is an easier school with rich hot chicks and every major anyone might be interested in. If I got a full ride to both GT and Stanford I'd pick Stanford.

Harbaugh built that foundation.

Stanford gets smarter students that don't have to try as hard to be successful. Hence hanging out in swimsuits during finals week.

Tech takes good students with potential and throws them into the flames. They either get burned up or become forged into a man of the same quality as a Stanford grad.

But I do think our recruiting should be much more national. We should have a guy that recruits the west coast, a guy that recruits the northeast/midwest, a guy that recruits the south/southwest and then take the other coaches and divide them up in Georgia.

Agree with first two paragraphs. And the last, we get the rest of the guys from GA after the SEC takes first pick. We need to recruit out of state more. There's some diamonds in the rough, there have to be

Exactly. The whole "Tech doesn't offer degrees athletes want" thing is a joke. Athletes want whatever allows them to concentrate on football (or girls in swimsuits) the most.

Do you think Julius Peppers really wanted to learn about Afro American studies? Is Matt Leinart truly a ballroom dancing connoisseur? Does Todd Gurley...well, I can't actually find what he's majoring it. Maybe it's something to do with scooters, alcohol, and guns? If so, then he might actually be taking a major he's interested in.

The point is that we lose the academic side of the recruiting battle not because we don't have degrees in areas that interest student athletes, but because all we have are real degrees. If we gutted one of our engineering programs so that you didn't have to take any math and the final exams contained questions about the shapes of various sports balls, it wouldn't be an issue for recruiting that all we have are STEM majors and a good business school.

I don't know for sure but I'm willing to bet that not all Stanford football players have to take a calculus course like Tech football players do. Compare whatever majors most Stanford players take to Management at Tech and we'll see whether the situations are really comparable.

I'd also like to see them do this for the next couple years, but I have to say what they have done is impressive. After this season it's tough to say what they are doing is a fluke.

Where is this evidence of "hanging out in swimsuits" during finals? You could barely wear a swimsuit in the summer at Cal.

I'm fairly certain any STEM major at Stanford has to put in some serious study time.

Anyway, enough with this Stanford dicksucking.
