I have not seen this discussed. Why did CPJ have us to kick off in the first half when we are so poor on defense and our kickers are consistantly only able to kick to the ten usually. (By the way) I thought of this imediately when I saw what he had done. The results were just as I expected since we had stopped almost no one all year in simular situations. I thought at the time, it would seen, it would be better for us to go with what we are best at to start with rather than what we are not. I'm not saying things would have turned out different but It looked to me like we would have a better opportunity for things to go better for us if we had received the ball. Just my opinion. What do you think?

Just stubborn PJ who says "pick your half, you have to give it to 'em sometime."

Completely agree. Whether we scored all day or not, we didn't need to be the one playing catch-up. IF we could have gotten on the board and kept scoring, they would need to "hold serve" just to stay even. That's a big deal psychologically. The fact is, the game was over when Rambo stripped Robbie.

I would defer every time I win the toss. I love the opportunity to get a score before the half and then get the ball back first and put another score on the board. A lot of games turn that way. My only exception would be if heavy rain is on the way and I want the ball while it's dry. Just a matter of prefernce.

Is this the thread where all of the old people who TYPE IN ALL CAPS come to post?

This. I've seen us (and other teams) do exactly this in games.

This.
There are two separate halves in football - The first and the last.

Agreed.

Not to mention, CPJ likes to capitalize on halftime adjustments. Deferring until the second half maximizes the number of post-adjustment possessions.

My thought EXACTLY. I threw the remote down in disgust and said 'there's your ballgame folks'. Even my family members that are, uh UGAy fans said same thing.
That changed the whole outlook of the game.

He always defers.

As already stated, he wanted the opportunity to score right before half, then get the ball back to begin the 2nd half.

I like that idea but I believe in coaching you need to consider all the information and make the decision based on what is best in each situation. In this situation I think it was pretty evident the other team would score almost imediately,(which they did), and we would not get the opportunity to make them to be playing from behind. Which in games like this is very important..

In football, possessions always alternate (except after successful onside kicks). By taking the ball first in a half, you give yourself a chance at an extra possession versus your opponent. The question is, do you want the extra possession in the first half or the second half? It's always better to take the extra possession in the second half, because you have a better idea what you need to do scoring-wise to win. It's the same principle as playing defense first in overtime, except it's harder to see.

Had we kept the scoring pace (like unc), it gives us a chance to score back to back posessions. Or if we get a death march to start the second half, you can really make the opposing team go cold.

The part I didn't like early in the game was that we were snapping the ball with 15 or more seconds on the clock. It was obvious that uga could score quickly, we should have tried to slow the pace of the game.

Not that it mattered. After the fumble, our d folded. The was just to much pressure to score. We should have stuck with the 3o instead of trying to pass.

I generally agree, but in this situation and our receint history. I don't believe it was a good idea to do this against ugag and thier powerful offence. Us being ahead especially at the start was the only way I believed we had a chance in that game. I was convienced once they got ahead there was little possibility of them making mistakes that would allow us to come back. on the other hand with us ahead it would be less pressure on us and possibly more on them. Thus mistakes for them as they became frustrated. Just my opinion.

So CPJ likes to capitalize on offensive adjustments, but not defensive ones? That attitude can't be good for the defense.

This line of "reasoning" is just goofy. We want the advantage of getting the ball first in the second half for a reason; that extra possession is worth more in the second half when we have a better idea of the defense. With our offense the objective is to control the clock and get the last possession of the first half and the first of the second.

There is no difference between the score being 0-0 or 7-0 if we march downfield and get stripped at the goal line. We are screwed either way.

The strip at the goal was huge. Given the talent disparity between our two teams I would say we would likely beat UGA 2 times out of 10 games played. You are hoping it's one of those two times on game day - when you play your best and match up with them and pull the game out. If we could have gone in with 7 to tie the game 10 or 11 minutes into the contest we had a chance. When they ran the ball back to the 50 and scored soon to go ahead 14-0 in the 1st our 20% chance of winning dropped to about 2%.

Wouldn't getting ahead early also help? Or making halftime defensive adjustments and getting better field position on the first drive of the second half be advantageous? The truth is that CPJ's focus is on offense, not defense, and that is to our detriment many times.

I understand we're the underdog and we pull for Tech to beat the odds, but I think you're being a bit generous.

The talent disparity between our two teams says we beat UGA 1 time out of 12 games played...8% chance of winning.
