The REAL Problem

Pretty good post, IMHO.

The only thing you said that sent me in a rage was calling Isaiah Johnson "not a bust." He is the worst player on the field whenever he plays.

I don't think they practice against th 30 on defense.

So whose defense does our offense practice with?

So who's defense does our offense practice with?

The scout team, which is coached indirectly by the same guys who coach the regular defense. The same holds on the other side of the ball. Their expertise is not spread or pro-style offenses, nor 4-2-5, wide tackle 6, or even 4-3 defenses.

So the scout team is not made up of guys on our team, guys that are trying to be starters, or even younger players, right? And we never let #2s play #1s, right? We never let #1s play #1s either, right?

Mainly it is comprised of redshirts and walk-ons like Dickey. The guys with a real chance to play are running our offense and defense, not other team's. You are also ignoring that we recruit players (scholarship and not) that fit our system, which is much different than our opponents. Our 180 lb. A-backs are atypical of a UGA running back for example.

uh, by dickey you mean justin thomas, right? pretty sure the guy that transferred from mtsu is also running the scout team.

to OP:

I agree about firing the 2 LB coaches, but not on groh. the rumor mill says he was micromanaging everything. that pretty well rules out the fault being on the assistants. Also, sweeting and young seem to have gotten worse as time has gone on. maybe it's groh, maybe it's kelly, but either way we need a new DB coach.

Again, i might be crazy, but it seems like the DL has improved a lot in the last 6 games.

and fire sewak. please!!!

Green is not a bust.. he will be our starting NT (or DT) next year.. jury is still out

So his job is not to field a winning football team? Head coach means a lot of responsibilities and that includes special teams, defense, and recruiting. I will agree that he's a good offensive coordinator though.
Yep he can x and o all day long but he needs to be more involved in the total program. Now many dont like Mushchamp but its clear that he like Saban and others are in the ---- ball game. They play every play and Paul just walks the sidelines. It appears he is concerned with only the offense and thats not his take.He is the man in charge so Al and the shortcoming of his players are HIS responsibility.Remember GOL and ROSS raising hell with everybody when something went wrong and patting players on the helmet when they did good.We need more involvement from Paul.Just old mans ideas ,thanks for listening.

Right on, Mack. It's clear to me that Paul abdicates the defense to the DC. He paces the sidelines and rolls his eyes at the D, but he's only thinking about how to make the offense better and win in a shootout. He's got to be more involved with the D if we want a better football team. And if that takes hiring a real offensive coordinator, he needs to do that.

Not necessarily.

If he was micromanaging because the assistants were not his choices and could not teach what he wanted taught then the blame can go to the assistants partially but more to the person who insisted they stay around.

I have no idea if that was the case. But we seemed to improve at times over the past couple of years followed by collapses. My theory is opposing offenses found ways to exploit the adjustments Groh made from play to play by speeding up. And we had no answer in a reliable base defense.
