What do we do? Have we already offered a new DC? Do we go for continuity and keep Kelly as DC? If so do we go after a defensive line coach?

I think there is something to be said about continuity, but I think Groh was partly handcuffed by not being surrounded by coaches who had the same philosophy as him. We should either keep our current staff and hire one replacement coach with Kelly staying at DC or clean house and get all new guys in.

I think the former is much more likely.

I believe that PJ will still go after a young passionate coach with something to prove.

I do think Kelly will stay on staff as DB coach depending on the new DC. Kelly has earned the right to stay on this staff though.

I agree that I would like to keep kelly on the staff.

But I think, in all honesty, we need to give the DC an opportunity to put together his own staff...if he can. If he can't, then ok.

If he can put his own staff together, maybe he still leaves CK as secondary coach. Or maybe walkosky goes and CK goes back to running special teams. But the point here is; giving a DC an opportunity to clean house and pick his assistants with recruiting in mind....to me is important.

This. Kelly did a good job with ST before. I think W has done well too. Either way, let the new dc pick his staff if he wants.

With ALL the coaches/DC's out there - why must we take the easy road? We don't need to settle for a öööö 2nd or 3rd tier DC. Our D will continue to go down the same path it's been going down. I don't disagree with keeping him on staff, but let him do what he did before. Not take over the D entirely.

Personally if I was Paul Johnson, I'd invite Giff Smith (Buffalo Bills DL coach with Gailey) for an interview, and if he fits the part, offer him. Not sure Giff would be interested. He used to coach our DL from 2004 to 2009, and was our recruiting coordinator from 2006 to 2009. We had some great talent on defense during those years. Local guy, too. Played at Georgia Southern in late '80's, coached at UGA as grad assistant in the '90's, has obviously recruited the state, and knows the challenges of Tech.

CCK might "deserve" to stay but it's not like he'd be out on the streets. Does anybody deserve lifetime tenure in a college coaching job? Probably best for everyone that the deck gets shuffled and everybody moves along. Kelly's prolly already updated the resume.

They should scrap the whole defensive bunch and start over. Because of them look at where they are today. They recruited and attempted to coach the players and didn't get it done.

No. I couldn't have imagined much worse a performance against UGA. He didn't make something out of nothing for that game, and we need someone who can do that at Tech.

I guess it'd be ok to give him an interview. Honestly I'm starting to think he's getting waaay too much credit. He's reached mythical Vad Lee status yet he's never been more than a position coach anywhere. Todd Grantham 2.0? :dunno:

Agreed.

The telling thing about Kelly to me was pointed out by Herbstreet. It was where Louis Young was playing soft coverage on a 3rd and 5. You do not do that. You do not play 10 yards back on a 5 yard play. You do not give up the under route.

Bringing him back for recruiting alone would be a major score. I don't think Giff is coming back though.

We need to get someone in here that runs a 4-3. We can't recruit well enough for the 3-4.

Agreed.

Yep, just an interview. I hope we interview at least five potential DC's.

We need to clean house and get rid of the slugs.

then preston and sewak need to go.

I am sorry, but one doesn't recruit well nor coach well (sewak) and the other has brought in recruits though I can argue not much better than anyone else could do.

How do you figure?

Giff was RC for 06, 07, 08 and 09. He gets way too much recruiting credit and I don't know why. 3 of his 4 classes were tech avg.

Recruiting coordinator does nothing more than arrange visits, camps, logistics. Each coach is bound by rules on when and how many times they recruit.

i heard that ellis johnson and bama's secondary coach are the favorites

LSU fired their DC before playing us and hired a 3O specialist just for the Peach Bowl. Is there a "Southern Cal Specialist" out there somewhere?
