About Chan\'s Offense and the ACC in general...

I think there's 1 point that needs to be made about Chan's offense and the defenses he faces. Yes, his offense isn't flashy and it's not designed to ring up a lot of points. But he also came into this league at a time when the defenses have greatly strengthened.

If you look at the ACC from top to bottom, most of the schools have decent to good to great defenses. I'm talking Miami, VPI, UVA, F$U, NC State, Tech, Maryland, BC, Clemson, Wake and even UNC are starting to get tougher on defense...These are all schools that do a good to really good job of keeping opponents out of their end zone (with the exception of UNC recently).

Even the Fridge is finding it difficult to score in this league now. If Joe Hamilton were QB'ing us and Fridge was coaching us, we still wouldn't ring up all the points that we did back in the late 90's. There are very few teams that you can expect to roll up 40 points on now in our conference.

Our conference is now one of the toughest, most physical, smashmouth conferences in the nation...right up there with the SEC and all their defenses. The change in our conference in the last 5 years has been fast, historic and surprising. In the 90's, only FSU and some UNC teams could really strap it on and lay the wood to people on defense. But around 2000 or so, things shifted and we're not an offensive conference anymore.

I'm not saying this to defend Chan. It's just that after seeing the scores around this conference for the last few weeks/years it's become apparent that Chan has a big task in front of him every week.

I say all this, even though I really don't like his offense to this point. It's just worth mentioning.

The ACC is God-awful tough now.

You have made a heckuva point that deserves some thought.

Regarding Tech's plan on offense, I happen to like it a lot. Of course, with this approach, a dominant OL is needed to chew up yards and clock. When it works, scoring points on nearly every drive isn't as important as being able to get first downs and play a game of strangulation with field position. Now we just need that kind of OLine play!

If I want to see 45 points a game, I will go watch the Hawks play. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I believe that I am correct in saying...

6 ACC teams finished in the top 25 last year in total defense. Over half the conference in the top 25...that is a tough defensive league.

Your point about Friedgen is a good one. He has been able to have prolific offenses everywhere he has been. His offenses are struggling more than at any time in his career, which says that the defenses have caught up with and passed the offenses in this league.

These things swing like a pendulum, and defense is in right now.

I wasn\'t aware of that stat, Jacketup...

It strengthens my point even more.

Bottom line...ACC offensive coaches have a monumental task every week dealing with all of the fast, tough defenses in our league.

Re: I believe that I am correct in saying...

Well, those stats are also misleading. How many "great" QB's were there in the ACC last year? Isn't "a great defensive league" another way of saying "a poor offensive league"? Not saying this is the 100% cause of our high defensive rating, but it certainly doesn't hurt...Just a thought.

I think your premise is faulty.

At least 1/3 of stats are non-conference. And the fact that there were NO exceptional QBs in the league makes the odds of it being bad offenses instead of good defenses far fetched.

Take 11 teams at random from Div 1. You will get several good QBs. The odds of a league having no good QBs has to be very, very low.

[/ QUOTE ] Ok, so 1/3 of the stats are out of conference...how tough is the average out of conference schedule for most teams? Most teams aren't exactly playing the cream of the crop as their out of conference opponents, so this would help the defensive ratings, by playing against lower quality offenses.

I must be missing something here. You are saying there were no exceptional QBs? If there are no great QB's, how does this support that the credit should be given as great defense instead of poor offense?

I am not saying that the ACC doesnt have a lot of great defensive teams. I believe we do. But I do think that some of the stats are influenced by playing teams that have poor offensive ratings.

Well...

#1. The ACC played a solid OOC schedule. No question tougher than the SEC. It should be harder, not easier for an ACC defense to end the season in the top 25.

#2. I believe a thorough analysis would show that the ACC had 11 QBs who struggled statistically last year. The point is that is extremely unlikely unless they struggled because of the ACC Defenses, which all 11 have in common as having faced, being extremely tough.

#3 Look at our own known data points. We made the very good, statistically wise, QB for UConn look bad.

Re: Well...

A good example of ACC defenses in OOC games...our defense...We held Auburn to the fewest points that they've scored since LSU in '04. No one has held them even close to 14 points. We did it in their stadium.

Last year, we held UGA to 19 points...in 2003, we held Auburn to 3 points.

And our defense is just right in there with a bunch of others in our conference.
