Kelly is our next DC

he didnt but all he did was call grohs plays.

thats the point. he cant implement his system or plays or terminology midseason at all. so no one knows one öööö thing about him as a dc. period. this game or the five prior.

only person that would is pj when they talk philosophy and scheme. i already can see kelly is a three deep two deep shell coach and man under. backends dont change much. but the under does. that is a big ? for anyone.

and the other big ? is can he and how does he lay HIS d foundation scheme and plays. how well can he teach it. how well can he correct it? lay out his program. right now he didnt so that at all. so for me the answer is no. keep him on staff but hire a dc you do trust and let them choose a new dl and lb coach.

I think that's what's gonna happen.

Yet we have five years of him on the defensive staff failing. I don't want a young DC, I want someone who has proven himself over a much longer time than a game and a half. You idiots who want a young guy are playing craps, not chess.

what? Where has he failed? As an assistant you have to relay the message that the DC is preaching. Nobody on the staff has a better eye for talent than CCK

My two cents: the defense was fired up today. They were fired up for F$U. I have to give CCK credit for that shift in attitude. I also saw solid fundamentals today. People sticking with their assignments and getting to the ball. Finally, the intensity was there like I haven't seen in YEARS on a GT defense. Our boys played mean today. I loved the chippiness at the end of the game. We need our defense to have some swagger and they had that today. I believe that's coming from Kelly and I'm ööööing excited about it. The man has his **** mind rite and has the **** minds of our defense rite. Hire the man. Let him build his defense and maintain this intensity.

PJ will make the decision. But I doubt Kelly will be the next DC. This hire is essentially PJ's job and he is gonna get a rock solid DC.

This thought process is very flawed. Here is the issue. The DC and the OC at GT will never be peer positions. What does this mean? It means when the defense does their job...we won because our coach is an offensive genius. When we lose...it will always be because the defense gave up too many points. Case in point...BYU...there are dozens of posts on here about how many points our defense gave up against BYU. How many points did our offense score in that game? 3. Defense scored 1 TD. Special teams scored 1 TD. We lost that game because the triple option was a complete bust.

In that kind of environment...why would a "rock solid" DC come coach here. Those that believe we will get a big name DC are high. It is laughable. No big name DC will come here.

If you were Paul and this is your last shot for a DC... giving someone a "shot" would be the last thing on your mind. Kelly will get it if he is the best available.

I like kelly, but this defense needs to be shaken up, emptied of old ideas, and refilled with a successful scheme.

I like Paul and want him to win. He needs to pick the best DC not just the one who deserves a shot.

It should be emptied of the Groh ideas? Not sure I understand this statement. Also I dont believe CCK would be giving anything. He has earned it on and off the field

Isn't Kelly one of our better recruiters as well?

Yes. Absolutely. And a lot of those guys on the field for him now were directly recruited by him. I think we saw some of the resulting chemistry of those kinds of relationships today. Those guys played their hearts out for their coach. Sometimes, coaching searches are hard and complicated. Every now and then it can be this easy. I'm all in for CCK.

PJ said he wants something simpler on defense where the guys can line up and play fast and instinctively, and he wanted better teaching of fundamentals, particularly tackling.

Today we looked much faster and certain of what we were doing, and no one can deny that tackling and coverage was very fundamentally better. In this regard it looked like with time CCK was able to provide just what CPJ wanted.

Regarding playing with emotion and intensity, while we definitely did play with it today, it's hard to tell how much of that was this being a super bowl for us and a crappy bowl for USC. And that in no way denigrates the effort and heart with which we played. It's just acknowledgement that CFB is incredibly emotional and its hard for us fans to get a read from just one game. So it may well be they were playing for CCK or it may just be they were fired up for this team in this situation after a frustrating season.

Fortunately CPJ already knows at this point whether kids are going to respond to CCK because he's seen a lot CCK working with the guys in practice. The reports going into this game were that the staff was extremely pleased with how the team was practicing, saying they were very focused and intense.

I'm not going to say we should hire the guy because I'm not on the inside. What I can say is the defense played very fundamentally sound and fast vs USC. Somebody did some coaching and got this defense ready for USC. CPJ will know if it was Kelly or not and act accordingly.

As Kelly is already known to be a good recruiter and a solid person/high integrity guy, and as we do not have the money for a bigshot DC, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if Kelly gets the nod.....provided it was he who got these guys prepped to play good, fast, fundamental defense. And whatever else you can say about Johnson he's pretty astute concerning the things he has his hands on.

I dunno about that. Football coaching requires gigantic egos and most coaches are control freaks. I doubt he had much say when Groh was around.

Or the prior DC. My point was the db's haven't been very good and the soft coverage has been a constant during his tenure. The sad thing is that he may be all that we can afford because of our ööööty basketball coach.

You teach the Dbs what is being relayed from the DC. Your job as the assistant is to make sure that there technique is sound and the players eyes are in the right place. You do realize that CCK was here for Tenuta also? So coverage hasnt always been soft.

Yes, I realize that. I'm just not sold on him and think at least a little of our failures during his tenure are his fault.

This is totally a "Mac McWhorter is our next head coach" thread.

Anybody posting about UGA or any other game aside from this bowl are going retart. You think you can install a defensive scheme using just the bye week?!?!?

This was the first true test of him as a DC. Yes he had a wind to aid in throwing their QB off. But he also called great run blitzes and it looked like the DL was well schemed against the short pass game.

No one is saying he is an elite DC or will be successful. They are saying he earned the shot to be DC. Also, we don't have any money to afford a high end DC. Instead, we can invest money in an assistant coach who has a lot of energy and is a good recruiter.

Let's see what Kelly gives us.
I agree with this. I also think this is the best the D has played against the run all year.

The UGA game was typical of how thier offense performed all year. There were some exceptions but they pretty much ran up and down the field all year.
