Question for the \'fridgemover about recent meeting

Did Chan comment at all about next year's offense? I don't have to have any details, but just knowing that changes are really in the works and the recent talk isn't just an internet rumor would make me happy.

Re: Question for the \'fridgemover about recent meeting

Yes, he told me there were changes being made but I did not or would not press him. He did state that Reggie is our QB and unless someone stood up RB would be our QB.

I'm up! I'm standing, I'm standing!

Well, why would he bench him now? He's gone with the kid for 3 years and has stayed with him through all the inconsistant play. I think it's safe to say that RB will be the man again this year which is why I think 6-7 wins is what we'll be seeing AGAIN. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

Re: Question for the \'fridgemover about recent meeting

Chan would bench him if one of the other qb's step up but none has.

Reggie couldn't be a third string Arena League QB. How did things get so bad for Tech at QB?

Re: Question for the \'fridgemover about recent meeting

I'm going with you on this one JD. I've seen the others at Spring scrimmage and RB just appeared to me to be the one to do the job. I was surprised at what I saw because I really expected a better showing from the others.
As I see it, RB is good enough to do the job, he just needs to work on his thinking some. As unpopular as this sounds, I don't think CCG has too much of a choice at QB position. Who knows, maybe something or someone will stand up and blow this thing wide open. I hope so anyway.
Consistency consistency consistency !!!!!!! Got to have it.

Re: Question for the \'fridgemover about recent meeting

I'm not able to make it to the practices but I remember hearing the same thing about A.J. Suggs. Great practice QB, not so great in the games. Ball is among the bottom 5% or so among D1 starting QBs. I keep hearing we don't any talent at QB, but in the process of having Ball at QB, we know of atleast one guy good enough to get the job done. He transfered and I believe is on an NFL roster now.

I realize that Chan has kinda forced his hand with sticking with Ball so long. Unless the bottom totally falls out, Ball will be out guy. I just don't see why anyone else was given a real shot at QB.

Re: Question for the \'fridgemover about recent meeting

They all are given a shot but if you can't read defenses and pick up blitzes then you can't play. You are right RB is our QB and all we can hope for is he controls his emotions reads the progressions of the routes and makes the best decision. The OL should be much better so that will give him the time he needs.

Re: Question for the \'fridgemover about recent meeting

One player that falls into that category is Garner. He doesn't practice well but when he's the qb for the scout team in scrimmages he always moves the ball. As Fridge stated, an improved o line will mean an improved RB. Not having to run for his life most of the time will allow him to sit back in the pocket rather than having to throw on the run. We should see a nice improvement in the o line this year.

Re: Question for the \'fridgemover about recent meeting

ya, in Ball's defense, the protection he got wasn't the greatest. But part of that goes back to the fact that teams load the box and send guys after him with low risk of getting burnt so it kinda goes hand and hand.

I think the most frustrating part to me, is that he seems to be just that far away from being a good QB. I hope this new offense can get him to relax. To me, his biggest problem seems to be that he tries to hard to make things happen, instead of taking what the defense gives him. When he's out that smiling, having fun, he's tough to beat. When he starts mouthing off, has a scold on his face, and generally tense, not so good times for GT's offense. If our OL can improve to the point where Ball feels confident and comfortable back there, I think we could see a Jason Campbell type year out of him.

I love this type of optimism. If only a fifth of our fan base could feel the same.

Re: Question for the \'fridgemover about recent meeting

I want to agree with everything you just wrote, and I do on a lot of it.
However, RB's biggest challenge has and will be reading coverages after the ball has been snapped. If he can suddenly figure this out, we can have a good year.

Re: Question for the \'fridgemover about recent meeting

To be honest, Reggie doesn't need to have a Jason Campbell type year to have a successful senior season. Just improving to around a 55% completion rate would do the trick.

Re: Question for the \'fridgemover about recent meeting

fool me once shame on you...
fool me twice shame on me...
fool me thrice shame on Chan...
fool me quadruple??? and I'll be really pissed off.

I am right there with you in my reality mode. In my dreamer's mode, the vision is blurry but beautiful.

I was wondering about this the other day. Maybe someone with a better grasp of statistics than me can help us out here, what WOULD RB's 2005 have looked like if he had a 55% completion rate? How many more yards, TDs, INTs, etc would that translate into? I know it's purely speculative and there are a ton of variables, but just for shats and giggles, what would it look like?

Re: Question for the \'fridgemover about recent meeting

Well, I don't claim this is statistically sound, but reaching 55% would mean 26 more completions. It shouldn't effect his int ratio because he isn't throwing any more passes, just completing more (although I guess you could argue he might throw fewer?). His percentage of TDs per completion would suggest 1.6 more, so 1 to 2 more over a year. Based on his avg. yards per completion it would also work out to 309 more passing yards.

But those are just the raw numbers. My thinking is that those 26 completions, depending on when they came, could have kept drives alive and led to more scoring. It would average out to 2-3 more completions per game and when they occured would be the most important point. Come to think of it, it probably would lead to more passes thrown so who knows what the cumulative effect might be. But setting that aside, two more completions at the right time would have beaten State and tied ugag. Sprinkle a few more around at key points and who knows what it could have meant.
