We held Pitt to their 3rd lowest point total of the year, only slightly behind VT and FSU.

Vs UVA, our D did about as good as BYU, Maryland, and Duke. Not as good as Oregon, Pitt, or Clemson.

Vs Syracuse, better than everyone so far, including Clemson, NW, Penn State.

BYU shelled us, but they've shelled everybody this year for almost the exact same score other than UVA (fluke) and Utah.

We did relatively terrible vs Miami. Only South Florida and Savannah State did worse.

We held VT to their third lowest point total of the year, one score from Alabama's performance.

We held UNC to their third lowest point total of the year as well, behind USCe and VT.

We held Duke to their 2nd lowest point total of the year, behind VT.

As of today, we rank:

14th nationally in total defense
11th in rushing defense
15th in scoring defense.
26th in 3rd down conversion defense
16th in red zone defense
60th in pass efficiency defense

Very impressive. What is really holding us back is turnover margin where we rank 96th nationally.

awesome D, I wish we were a little more aggressive and created a few more Turnovers, but that's literally the only thing you can complain about (maybe pass rush as well...)

some of the numbers are a little inflated due to our offense holding the ball so well (we're not that great in yards/play partially due to Miami). But we've still been playing lights out. I would be very happy to continue with Roof as the DC, and think that we could have a great combo with PJ and Roof.

granted this is a very senior laden team, so the expectations on D may need to be tempered somewhat as we lose a lot on the line.

Agree on turnover margin, and that's largely offense.

We are 65th nationally in turnovers gained, but 102nd in the nation on turnovers lost. 97th on margin. And those are just fumbles and picks, not failed 4th downs.

Just curious... What are you looking at? Only points allowed?

With the OP? Yes. I think you can get a better feel for incorporating SOS in your metric by simple comparison. But even if you just take raw stats, GT is the 3rd best scoring defense in the ACC:

Someone's definitely doing his job. The defensive turnaround from last year is really remarkable.

I have to admit I was skeptical before the season that we would be able to make that jump in the first year of running a new scheme and whether we had the right personnel for the 4-3.

Roof has delivered. He clearly learned something since his last stop here.

I think two things are working incredibly well.

1) Roof has increased intensity. These guys are playing tough and mean. They are fired up on every play and I haven't seen a situation where the defense got beat because people weren't getting after the ball. I'm loving the fire of this defense.

2) Roof has simplified the "scheme" to allow the players to play. In other words, the guys aren't having to think about some complicated defensive "play", but are allowed to play to the position and do their jobs.

It's baffling how much better the defensive has gotten in one year. Absolutely fantastic. I hope Roof sticks around for a long time.

Where does GT rank on passing offense stats? Have they fallen off the chart yet?

I'm happy to say I was wrong about the Roof hire. Who would've thought our offense was gonna be what held us back this year?

LOL, you really want to know?

Stats available here:

http://stats.ncaa.org/team/index/11520?org_id=255

As one might expect most teams that are pass or run first don't do much in the other category like GT. However, Oregon and Baylor really stand out.

Oregon: #2 Rush and #20 Pass

Baylor: #1 Pass and #7 Rush

Other teams like Northern Illinois and Fresno State have decent balance.

Northern Illinois: #4 Rush and #64 Pass

Fresno State: #4 Pass and #81 Rush

Their records speak for themselves.

I'm not so much concerned about SOS as I am pace of game. Our offense is so slow and methodical that it limits the number of possessions for both teams.

Even adjusting for things such as avg starting field position and number of drives per game would, in my opinion, clarify the picture a little bit.

Don't see him leaving any time soon, if at all. CTR is a Tech man through and through. I think the only other job he'd even consider at this point would be HC...at GT.

Go back and look at the boards from when this hire was made. Pretty negative but a little hopeful ("anything is better than CAG"). Ted Roof has completely surpassed everyone's expectations, I think. We went from 40s-50s in total defense to top 20 with essentially the same personnel and some key secondary injuries. Super impressed.

^ This. With a neutral turnover margin we probably beat VT and crush Pitt/uva. With a turnover margin in our favor we beat BYU and maybe even Miami (though we won the turnover battle that game, Vad's fumble killed us).

We were -3 to VT and -2 to BYU. That's worth about 14 points against VT and about 9 against BYU, 19 against UVa, and about 4 against Pitt (we only lost two fumbles to one interception).

It makes BYU competitive.

Annnnnnnnd, the defense is not getting the support it got in past years from the offense.

It has been covered here, but our old defensive numbers were skewed by the fact our offense kept them off the field so much. This defense could be so much better if we just had even last year's offensive consistency ( which I know was not that great, but in comparison...)

I'll agree Roof was a good hire when Arron Murray is picking bits of bds turf out of his panties.
