Cut Blocking

Okay, I have to ask, is cut blocking a hard and fast requirement for PJ's offense to run effectively? I understand A backs cutting given their size limitations but seeing 300 lb. jugbutts diving on the ground does not seem to be creating the gaps for us to run between the tackles and has us looking like the French Army circa 1940 in pass protection. I know the Broncos were great at cutting in the Terrell Davis days but it does not seem to be working for us. So is it technique or bad coaching from Sewack?

People act like all 11 players on offense are cut blocking on every play. We don't cut block inside the tackle box much more than any other team does when running the ball. Everybody cuts DEs on certain running plays, everybody, even Alabama. The cut blocks all the other teams whine about WRT us is when we do it to CBs and sometimes safeties who are coming up in run support. And we don't do that with any jugbutts. Even if a jugbutt lays a cut block on a defender who isn't on the line, he's doing it to a LB and he basically has to because he's trying to block horizontally half the time and no 300 lb guy is going to be fast enough to drive block horizontally after getting to the second level. I don't know that we've even attempted to do that more than a handfull of times this season because fewer of our play calls than usual have seen the need for linemen at the second level. Everything happens in our backfield because nobody is executing their perfectly normal blocks, cuts and non cuts alike.

Agreed. Contrary to popular belief, the five guys up front just don't dive at defender's feet at every snap. We typically only have one or two guys on the OL that cut block. The other guys are typically pulling, swinging, or trying to get to the second level.

I think the main reason why we do cut inside is because we don't have quick enough feet and we lose leverage very quickly when we stand up against good linemen. I'm sure everyone knows the result when our OL does stand up (during pass blocking).

^Wrong.

We cut backside to eliminate the defender right on the spot. It's used to cut off the backside defenders immediately so that if the bback gets the ball- or other back running up the middle- they are able to run through the middle scott-free as the frontside is covering the other options.

Not for every option play. Tis why I used the word "typically". Plenty of plays where we don't even block the backside by design.

Sewak is teaching the techniques that the head coach wants him to teach. Whoever our OL coach is under CPJ is going to coach our kids to block the same way

+1

Thank you!!!! Nothing pisses me off more than people on here that complain that we cut block like it's the only technique we teach.

No.

We're just so spread out on the line at the snap that we have to cut to get to people sometimes.

Is it inconceivable that someone else could teach them more effectively?
No.

Lots of folks seem to think Sewak isn't that great of a coach.

/shrug

Remember, we used to have 2 OL coaches, now we have one. Maybe that has something to do with something.

Don't remember pass blocking ever being that great even when Spencer was here. I remember Nesbitt being chased around a lot and him just throwing it up there and Bay Bay snatching it.

Yes but I do remember people knowing their assignments on the triple and the counter. We haven't been particularly good at blocking assignments this year.

The end around pass in the bowl game, for instance, was wide open and would have worked if we didn't completely turn the DT free.

I could be wrong, but the only person I know of who could speak with authority to the quality of an OL coach on this board isn't an entirely a fan of Sewak.

I think EffortWarrior79 could be a good authority in this particular scheme but I think even if he had any not-so-positive comment, I don't think he'd talk about his former coach like that.

I've been thinking for a few days that I'd love to hear his views and observations about the current state of things with GT football. But I also would not expect him to post it on an open forum. BTW, I hope he's doing well.

Didn't Monken have a major role in the offense before he left? I've wondered if his presence masked a staff weakness that became exposed once he was gone.

I'm no football guru, but I love the Jackets and will always root for them no matter what.

I seem to remember a lot of cuts inside the box against DTs. Maybe i'm misremembering.

No. You can run the offense without cut blocking.

In theory, but is any team running the offense not cut blocking significantly? I can't think of any.

In fact, forget this offense, most teams that rely primarily on rushing seem to cut block more than those that rely primarily on passing. Even some of the passing spread offenses rely on precisely timed cut blocks to clear the passing lanes on quick releases.
