GT Coaches Winning Percentages

In he defense, yes he does. To detract, though, he probably plays more patsies than the coaches of old.
I believe CPJ faced as many FCS opponents in a single year (and did that two times) as O'Leary faced in his entire duration as HC.

Someone run the numbers using only teams that have 85 schollies. No FCS and no transitionals like Southern this year.

"average national finish" from 38 to 43? digging into stats pretty deep.

CPJ went to a BCS Bowl Game, beat UGA (and its usually a close game), won an ACC Title, 3/6 years won the Coastal, beat FSU twice, went to Chick-Fil-A/Music City Bowl, etc. He usually has team in position to at least play for something somewhat exciting.

What is Chan Gailey's biggest win? snuck up on Miami in 05 which lead us to nowhere? Gailey never had team in position to play in any big game.

I'm with you but I didn't have a problem with Gailey either. He had just signed Sean Renfree when he was fired and that was always Chan's achilles....he didn't have a great QB (Yes that was his fault). He signed one and was fired. His mistake was flirting with the Dolphins, not his Coaching ability IMHO.
Chan is still helping GT and no one wants to admit it but Calvin, Demaryius, Morgan Burnett, Michael Johnson, Derrick Morgan, etc, he recruited NFL players and keeps us as a team that can say, hey why don't you check out GT's NFL players.
I don't want our bandwagon fans to call for PJ's head when look at his recruiting class year. Best by far in talent and numbers. AJ Gray is on the national radar and is the favorite for player of the year in GA.

If we can get O'Leary back as HC and Fridge as OC... sure sounds good.

As a follow up, Johnson didn't interview with ND or Auburn when he was on top of the ACC when he was popular. O'Leary and Gailey both interviewed and PJ has stayed true. The man deserves some credit for having the 3rd best winning percentage in GT history and not flirted with other coaching jobs.
His ONLY problem is simple, his record against UGA, VT, and Miami. All the other öööö people just need to get the sand out of their .....
Recruiting has been an issue but he went and got the Alabama POY and stuck him at QB...seemed to be a difference maker.

You have an interesting way of agreeing with someone...

True, but it is difficult to compare different eras. Dodd had a lot of really good teams on his schedule back then that were not as good today. Case in point, Tech opened with Rice in 1962 and UPSET them at Grant Field. Hard to imagine now, but Rice was a powerhouse back then and was ranked in the top 10 at the start of that season.

can you imagine how full our stadium would be if we had Rice as the season opener?

This Saturday at Noon at Bobby Dodd Stadium: Rice

it would be a packed house! but would there be enough soy sauce?

Yes, but GOL got to play Wake, Duke, Maryland, UNC, and NC State every year when they were all pretty terrible. CPJ hasn't had many problems with those teams either. No VT, no Miami for GOL which have been thorns in our side.

Just gonna quote this once again...

And here's an interesting look at our strength of schedule over the years.

From: http://cfbdatawarehouse.com/data/ran...m_rankings.php

Decade -- Schedule Strength Rank
1941-1950 -- 20
1951-1960 -- 16
1961-1970 -- 21
1971-1980 -- 42
1981-1990 -- 38
1991-2000 -- 39
2001-2010 -- 25

So, it looks like our current schedule strengths are higher than at any time since Dodd. And, they are more or less the same as the Dodd era.

interesting, but mostly pointless without 2011-2013 and without breakdown by coach for a discussion on CPJ and other coaches

Maryland, Wake, Duke, no argument.

UVA and UNC were top 15-20 during the CGOL era. NC ST has always been NC ST, not great but not easy.

George Welsh, Mack Brown, Oscar Davenport, Jamie Barnett, Torry Holt, Tiki Barber, Julius Peppers, Aaron Brooks, these were all names we had to contend with. CGOL also had to deal with the fallout from 1994, and playing always top 5 FSU every season. I don't think it was much easier.

What does the SOS% number mean in tersm of relative rankings of other teams SOS numbers?

actually Southern isn't transitional. They are a full conference member and are 2-0 in the sun-belt.

No, but what if we opened with Tennessee?

I think the mere fact that Miami and Florida State didn't continue to run train through the conference show that it's gotten better in addition to them coming back down a little bit.

Today's ACC is better than GOL's.

Additionally GT was one of the lone bright spots in Southeastern Football. Georgia, Bama, and Auburn were all in various stages of being down as Tennessee and Florida were rising to the top.

South Carolina was nowhere near what it is today.

And high schoolers of yesteryear were also not as famous thanks to recruiting sites, twitter, facebook, etc. The recruiting process wasn't a product of hype most of which is negative towards the ACC and extremely positive for our regional competition the SEC.

I think it's currently one of the more difficult times to be successful at Georgia Tech.

You forget that Gailey, our "offensive genius" played for the ACC championship against powerful Wake Forest and even with the best receiver in college football Calvin Johnson he only managed to score 6 points.
