Tenuta

I know this is the elephant in the room. A lot of Tech fans like to reminisce about the Tenuta years. My question is if Tenuta was our DC this season, would the defensive results be improved, or is it simply a lack of defensive talent that no coach could overcome?

I think the other team would score the same number of points per possession against us if Tenuta was here, but our defense wouldn't be out there for ten plays each time. We'd either get the stop or not, and get off the field, which would put our offense out there more, which would wear the other team down more, and we'd be able to score a lot more in the 2nd half than we're doing now.

But what do I know.

It's not the coaching, it's the players. At some point they have to step up and own it. We just needed one play somewhere along the line and we did not get it done.

Go Jackets!

This. UVA, under Tenuta, has a Top 25 defense (at No. 25) allowing 331 yards per game and 4.82 yards per play.

GT, under Roof, comes in at #73 allowing 416 yards per game and 6.37 yards per play.

If you trade talent, Roof would have better stats. UVA has a pipeline into the Tidewater area 7 on 7 teams (the football equivalent of AAU) and VA doesn't have the talent to support 2 D1 programs.

It does come back to the Jimmys and Joes. We got screwed on DQs and losses at End. The program is still on the cusp of greatness. Last night sucked, but I think we could use that to our advantage to solve dome problems.

On D,I think we just don't have the best talent.2 and 3 star recruits....You can only coach up so much!

Nonsense! It's the coach's job to put players in a position to succeed. Roof is not doing that. 4 man rush and soft zone coverage is a dumpster fire of a strategy with our personnel.

Our problem was never allowing too many points when Tenuta was around. Conversely, our problem has never been not scoring enough with PJ around. That's at least partly because Gailey gave Tenuta the best athletes on the team for defense, whereas under PJ we have not been putting our best talent on D. Still, it's hard not to imagine what might have been.

Unfortunately, both PJ and Tenuta are alphas who probably would've wound up trying to choke one another on the 50 after two practices.

I still think our biggest need is to amp up recruitment and get out from under the Board of Regents.
