Should Johnson just have promoted Kelly?

I know Kelly technically left before Roof was hired, but that basically boils down to being told he wasn't in the running.

In hindsight, was that a mistake? Kelly went to FSU as a position coach for a season but is now their DC. So it's not like he really needed a bunch more maturing.

I don't think it matters. You could put Erk Russell in here and the results would be about the same. It's talent or lackthereof. Purely.

Was Kelly a good recruiter? Roof seems to be most valuable there.

Id also be interested to hear a comparison of their schemes from someone that actually knows what they are taking about. I'm not totally sure what Kelly would have differently this year - seems that both coaches want(ed) to simplify the D as much as possible, keep the ball in front of us, force low percentage passes and capitalize on mistakes. I'm actually liking the scheme this year, we are just getting beat due to lack of talent.

I will say that despite being fairly awful all year, the D is holding up its half of CPJ's"get three stops and well put the O in positing to win" bargain. UNC was a tough loss, but after two nights of sleep it honestly doesn't look that bad. "Embarrassing" is not the word for it by any stretch.

If Grow were still here we'd be getting truly torched and then I think discussing replacing the DC makes sense.

Seems purely like a talent issue to me. Who recruits better, Kelly or Roof? That's the guy I want as my DC. Talent fills holes in schemes pretty quickly.

Perhaps the same can be said of Giff Smith. I think he wanted the DC job and we know he could recruit.

Roof can out recruit all of those guys. To be honest, I've not been too impressed with FSU's defensive numbers this year. All the talent in the world to work with there. All teams are struggling with the up tempo/spread offenses.

FSU defensively is much worse statistically than they were last year under Pruitt and that is with top 10 talent across the board. I don't think Charles Kelly would've been any better than what we got.

A friend of mine who's an FSU fan said a number of their fans are complaining about Kelly not making adjustments and allowing games to be closer than they should be. I'm sure some of that is butthurt from falling from #1 all the way down to #2.

I really wished we'd kept him, but I wonder if he didn't go to FSU knowing that he was going to end up DC there anyway. It's obviously a better job than Tech.

While it's true they have all the talent, they did replace a whole lot of NFL talent this season, with a lot of players who are starting for the first time.

So true. With the attrition this offseason this was just a matter of time. I don't blame it all on recruiting, and I think we've got some good talent coming... But losing Attouchou, Hunt-days, and Whitehead (among others) spells disaster.

Agree that attrition hurt us, however, the efense's issues aren't due to talent alone.

Some of the things we're doing are just silly. Asking a guy to stand 10 yards off the ball then turn and run with a speedy receiver (who's coming at you full-speed) is a fool's errand. He will run by you every time.

Playing 10 yards off the receiver in the redzone is just silly. I mean, why?

If the defense can't show an ability to consistently stop people we are basically at the point where onsides kicks every time are the percentage play.

In my opinion it was. I thought Kelly was a bright young mind that came to understand how to be successful at GT. But I wasn't totally disappointed in the Roof hire. I just thought hiring Roof was "good enough" for our program. He's like a zebra though. His stripes are well known and he hasn't really changed much.

Weren't we thinking Roof would help in recruiting the Atlanta area?

He sure isnt setting the woods on fire at FSU, Pruitt had much better D.

Indeed. Feels like we're playing defense like it's 1999 (:hsugh: c'mon that's funny) and that's not a good thing.

It's like we're facing Woody Dantzler every Saturday. :turbonoes:

Kelly was one of our best recruiters
I also like his more aggressive approach to d over roof.

I also dont believe are d issues are just talent. We have the worst defense in the ncaa power 5 teams. We played 3 cupcakes and got gashed repetitively. Teams we know for a fact we have more recruited talent than.

Its on the coaching and scheme too for me. Based on that we cannot statistically be much worse than roof, so i would rather have kelly at this stage since he is more aggressive and recruiting is a wash.

So this is Diseqc starting a thread about the coaching staff? Did you catch Ebola or something?
