DeAndre Smelter: The Most Complete WR in College Football

Fantastic post, would love to see more like this throughout the season. Smelter's blocking is something to see every game. The guy just blows people up.

I obviously hope he does well but his NFL prospects aren't what I'm thinking about. This kind of play is the sort of thing that can put us in position to win these last three.

and its not just Smelter... check this huge block by Waller v Miami

4th&2 - Waller is at the top of the screen, one on one with the db

db doesnt disengage until RB is already in the endzone

I think in the end what will keep Smelter from being a truly elite NFL WR, though, will be his speed. He's definitely fast, but the 4.55-4.6 he will throw up at the combine won't be enough for scout's to drool (he's almost like the opposite of Stephen Hill in that sense).

I agree it will be the barrier, but there are a lot of elite receivers who have 4.5+s 40 times. Hopefully he can either get his time down to impress the scouts or "overcome" it to play as well as some of these guys have:

Anquan Boldin - 4.71s
Larry Fitzgerald - 4.63s
Brandon Marshall - 4.52s
Dez Bryant - 4.52s
Jordy Nelson - 4.51s

Not to mention that 4 of the top 25 receivers in the league are actually TEs now, who are right in line with (or slower than) DS.

Martellus Bennett - 4.68s
Rob Gronkowski - 4.65s
Jimmy Graham - 4.53s
Greg Olsen - 4.51s

Not saying he SHOULD be a TE in the league, but there are the numbers.
