Being a GT Student (finished last assignment/final today, Walk on Saturday), but a Virginia resident, I can confirm if you use the word "Tech" anywhere North of South Carolina you ARE referring to Virginia Tech

Wasn't this PHD also against U of L joining the ACC because it would harm the academic reps of certain ACC schools, to include unc?

Well, letting Lousiville in definitely was a "ok, we don't care anymore" move. Which sucks, because I really wish we'd have gotten WVU instead of Syracuse.

You may not know this because you were born after the Atlanta Olympics, but:

  • The name of the school doesn't even have the word "technology" in it, instead its "Polytechnic."
  • VPISU went to their first bowl game in 1946, and went to three total bowl games before Reagan was president. GT had as many national championships (3) as VPISU had bowl games at that point.
  • Heisman coached at GT for 15 years and won more than half his games there. VPISU's best coach ever is . . . Frank Beamer.
  • Georgia Tech has one of the most historic college football teams. VPISU has been good for the last 15 years, and that's it.

Just because you were raised in the back country doesn't mean that everyone thinks like you.

You forgot to mention the state of the art trophy case they have in Blacksburg.

Beat ugag in football 20 out of the next thirty years and everything will fix itself. GT doesn't need to lose the state anymore than it already has. Or move the Institute to Beijing.

I hate this idea. Georgia Tech is in Georgia, and we don't want to run away from our problems in this state, we just want to get better at recruiting within it and around it. We want to compete in it and win our share of battles here in Georgia. That would be conceding that Georgia owns this state and we'll try to focus only on being known nationally rather than locally instead of both because we cannot beat them. Besides Georgia Tech=home. Yes, "Tech" is still a good thing to be known as- THE Tech in football, but not at the expense of losing our identity.

It's pretty much us and VPI as the schools with Tech in their name that play D1, right? Am I missing any?

I brought this up similarly about eight years ago. Georgia Tech completely blew it the last twenty years by not protecting what they had earned. That is a national recognition as the TECH in sports.

When I moved to Maryland in 1981 everyone was calling us TECH and knew who TECH was. Then GT moved away from that brand, VPI rose in football, and now everyone in the state thinks TECH means VPI. It drives me crazy how we blew it when we allowed VPI into the conference without us negotiating the TECH name.

When I was a kid in the 60's there was still plenty of T insignias around town. Tech had the T, very close to Tennessee's T (different color of course). I don't mind the GT but I always liked how we were TECH nationwide.

Winning offers a school opportunities to brand themselves better for a moment. I like the idea. But we also used to be known as The Ramblin Wreck nationwide too. I still hear it from older guys.

Today we are equated to BUZZ which used to be a little unique. Today, not so much. I'd like to bring back The Ramblin Wreck too as part of our branding. It makes no sense and unnecessary to focus on Yellow Jackets alone, particularly when the name doesn't match our White and Gold, nor our Fight Songs.

Don't worry. It will all get so much better after the bowl game is over...

Does this already count as the offseason?
I believe that we're in the postseason, which comes prior to the very short pre-offseason, then, the official offseason along with reduced subscription rates.

When you say Bud-weiser, you've said it all!
This reminded me... Budweiser song was fun at the ACCCG. Maybe we need to start it later than we normally do. After whatever nonsense they were doing on the field, and FSU's band stopped playing whatever that 3rd song they know is, we finally got started on the Budweiser song. Game was already back from commercial break and play was beginning while all the Tech fans were still bobbing and yelling. Pretty cool.

Watching from home, I got a kick out of hearing the end of the Budweiser song as play resumed!
