@SportSourceA: #GT ended the season going three and out just 7.91% of offensive possessions. The next best in FBS was #EastCarolina at 13%. @GTPaulJohnson

@GTAthletics: RT @GeorgiaTechFB: Jackets faced 6 teams in top 30 in total defense: Clemson (1), Miami (15), Georgia (20), VT (22), Pitt (28), Virginia (30). Record: 6-0.

Pretty good offense it's too bad Oregon treats the game like a video game which draws the attention away from how effective we were as a team.

Miss State not in top 30? Kinda surprising.

GT finished #1 at 3rd down conversion % at 57.9%. Auburn was second at 52.5%.

GT finished #9 at 4th down conversion % at 70.6%. Ball st was #1 at 84.6%.

GT is currently #1 in rush yards at 4789 yards. Oregon is #12 with 3386. Southern is #2 at 4573.

GT is tied for #5 at rushing yards / attempt at 6.1.

Do they have this stat for 3rd and long? I remember hearing, but never seeing proof that we also lead the country in 3rd and long conversions.

Wonder how often the teams ahead of us in 4th down conversion went for it compared to us.

And is our Orange Bowl yards-per-rush mark a record? Seems like it would have to be.

Video game vs. death marches. I like our chances.

Agreed, Oregon's offense is flashy, but let's look at the two games. I didn't count defensive TDs or possessions ending via clock.

Oregon: 13 drives
8 scores (61.5%)
7 TD (53.8%)
1 punt
2 turnovers
1 failed 4th down

Tech: 11 drives
7 TDs (63.6%)
3 punts
1 turnover (and a flukish one at that)

We scored TDs on 64% of the drives for crying out loud. We've probably scored TDs drives on >50% of our drives this season. It's absurd how dominant this offense was this season.

They tweeted back in November - after the Clemson game, I think - that we were #1 in the country on 3rd and 8 or longer.

Wrong. This is not the offense you want to be running on a third and long so I hear

This is sort of hard to get your hands on actually. I compiled some stats from CFB Stats and here's what I came up with based on Pass and Rush stats for 7-9 yards to go and 10+ yards to go.

1) Alabama (41.56%)
2) Ohio State (40.54%)
3) Marshall (39.53%)
4) Western Kentucky (39.51%)
5) Appalachian State (39.13%)
6) Georgia Tech (38.24%)
7) East Carolina (36.36%)
8) USC (36.17%)
9) Auburn (36.14%)
10) Western Michigan (35.06%)

So 6th overall and 3rd out of P5 teams.

Just did some research, could be off by a few here or there. I counted up the number of offensive possessions that ended in points, missed FGs, punts, turnovers, and failed 4th downs. Here's what I got for 2014 GT offense:

139 total offensive possessions
66 TDs...................(47.4%)
32 punts................(23.0%)
18 turnovers..........(12.9%)
11 FGs...................(7.9%)
7 missed FGs..........(5.0%)
5 failed 4th downs...(3.6%)

So 60.4% of our possessions ended with a TD or a FG attempt. Unreal. The limited possessions this offense dictates in games keeps people from realizing how truly dominant it is. MSU actually forced more punts than we average per game this season.

I found the actual tweet, and I was a little off. Here's what it said:

Who are two best 3rd and 10+ offenses in FBS this year? #GT has converted 12 of 29 (41%) & #UGA has converted 8 of 21 (38%) #3rdDownforWhat

Holy hell, great find! I might bookmark this post.

Hurm. I had us at #2 behind Bama at 41.9% after the UGA game. Did we do badly enough in the last two to push us down that far?
