rebuttle to GTO not built for 3rd and long

Let's look at it like this. The phrase "this offense not built for third and long" was coined BJT (Before Justin Thomas). You have to admit that JT has a set of skills unlike those of other QB's before him. This offense, with JT at QB, does now have the ability to get those 1st downs on third and long whereas before, quite frankly, the phrase was pretty accurate.

Let's live in the present!

Not to take credit away from Justin, but the improve OL has much to do with the better performance as well.

Past OL pass blocking was horrible on any down where play-action could not slow the rush.

3rd and long was all about Smelter. FSU game showed we missed him. Didn't need him for MSU fortunately.
Yep. Whatever happened with Waller and Thomas miscommunicating on the pass/run routes I'm sure Johnson knows. But it did cost us the game.

It wasn't a miscommunication as much as it was a failure to read the D the same. Waller read the defense as a comeback and JT read it as a go. Iirc. Waller's stutterstep might have thrown JT off, too.

It's one of the drawbacks to having to read passing O.
