ACC Champ is probably not in the Orange Bowl next year

We're winning the ACC and going to the playoff so wherever that puts us.

I have to imagine that there will be an ACC team that finishes the year either undefeated or with only 1-2 losses between GT, Clemson, maybe FSU. If any of these teams finished the year with only 1 loss but still won the ACC, they'll get a playoff bid.

I don't know if there is a set formula for assigning teams to the NY 6, but the Chick-fil-A organizers might push for an out-of-state team to boost hotel and restaurant business.

Nah, I don't think so. I think they'd be interested to have us because of high ticket sales. Would the CFA Bowl organizers themselves have more interest in the game or in restaurant business?

Its chosen by the committee, not the bowl. I don't know if they are allowed to "push"

And because its based on geographic pairings I doubt we'd play in anything other than the Sugar or Peach.

We also need to win a Peach bowl (only semi-major bowl we haven't won I think).

That does indeed appear to be true. See below.
And because its based on geographic pairings ...
That appears to be a secondary consideration.

Remember their "most compelling matchups" criteria?
Per http://espn.go.com/college-football...ll-playoff-officials-discuss-how-select-teams:
According to the College Football Playoff, the committee will assign teams to nonplayoff bowls in a way that creates the most compelling matchups possible while also considering factors such as geographic proximity and avoiding rematches of regular-season and recent bowl games.
BTW, I did find a source that says the ACC champ is in the Fiesta or Peach when the Orange is a playoff location (and, of course, when the ACC champ is not one of the final four).
Source: http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/9488773/music-city-gator-bowls-partner-acc-big-ten.
The deals are in addition to the previously announced agreement with the Pinstripe Bowl, and the 12-year tie to the Orange Bowl for the ACC's champion if that game is not part of the playoff -- and the Fiesta or Chick-Fil-A if it is. The Russell Athletic Bowl has the first pick of an ACC team after the playoff and Orange Bowl.
Don't know of any source that indicates how CFP committee and/or Fiesta/Peach decide that question. Anyone?

Also, I'm guessing that should the ACC champ be a final 4 choice, a proxy team represents the ACC in either the Fiesta or Peach.

I think as a fan, the peach is nice because there's no real logistics to setup in order to attend the game.

But the kids on the team don't like it as much because it's not a trip somewhere.

I don't believe that's true.

Contract bowls: Rose (Big 10 vs Pac 12), Sugar (Big 12 vs SEC), and Oranage (ACC vs Big 10/SEC/ND).

When not in semi-final rotation, the contract bowls are the only ones where "replacement" teams are sent. Outside of getting into the playoff, there's absolutely no way for an ACC team to get into the Rose or Sugar or for Pac 12 to get into Sugar or Orange.

When a conference's contract bowl is in semi-final rotation and team is not in the playoff, the conference winner is guaranteed access to one of the access bowls.

Access bowl: Fiesta, Cotton, and Peach

The access bowls, as noted above, are selected by CFP. So, the ACC is unable to send a "replacement" team. You could have a situation like last year where the Big 12 got 2 into the access bowls, but that was only because Baylor and TCU were selected.

ESPN Insider Brad Edwards thinks we will play Bosie St in the Peach next year.

"Peach Bowl: Georgia Tech-Boise State
[
Yes, I have only one ACC representative, and it's not Florida State or Clemson. Those teams both lost half of their starters from last season, and both are inexperienced on the offensive line. They've recruited well enough to prove me wrong, but I'm going with Georgia Tech to win the league. I like the experience on defense, and the returning talent on offense is where it needs to be for a team like this -- at QB and on the O-line. Boise State returns 16 starters, including almost everyone in the trenches. Combine that with recent success, and there's no logical reason to like any other team for the Group of 5 spot."

Peach looks most likely given:

In years when the Orange Bowl is a national semifinal, the ACC champion plays in the Fiesta or Peach bowls if it is not selected for the playoff
That said, I've already booked my hotels in Miami and Dallas.

I'm not sure the kids wouldn't like it. This is a BIG game now, and all that goes along with it. The attention alone might be enough to outweigh the lack of a trip somewhere.

Just a nit, but Cotton will be a playoff bowl this year, so can't be used as an access bowl.

As clarification, when I wrote "proxy" I meant an ACC rep like GT was this past year in the Orange Bowl.

I'm not sure what you meant, so I'll ask this. If an ACC team were to be one of the final 4 (and presumably had won the ACCCG), would another ACC team be included in the NY6 bowls (presumably Fiesta or Peach) to represent the conference?

I'm curious, if the ACC champ is in the playoff, is the next highest ranked ACC team guaranteed a New Year's six bowl since the Orange is one of the semi-finals?

See 2014 season for answer

The short answer is no.

This ESPN article shows some of the possible scenarios, specifically look at their fake 2015 season.

If the 2nd place ACC team is ranked 11 or higher, they have to put them in and if a non-power 5 team is ranked 11th or higher they'd have to take a 2nd place top 12 ACC team.

Basically if we were ranked 12th in the final CFP poll next year like we were this year, we'd have been left out...like KSU was this year.

There are 6 games (12 teams) and the highest ranked non power 5 school gets the last bid even if they are outside the top 12
