I'm not too concerned about the sluggish offensive performance... Both centers are out, JT not playing many snaps if at all. CPJ's comment about the poor offensive line play isn't concerning either because that was our strength last year, and we get most guys back. I have a feeling that will be our best unit this fall.

If anything this report gets me jacked up. This year could finally be our year of stout defense to compliment our offense. I'll be the first to admit that I doubted JHD would be at tackle (thought DE), but looks like that's where the coaches have him and he can't be blocked... And to see Kallon's name mentioned is awesome too. We could have a great D-Line this year.... JHD, Gotsis, Freeman, Gamble, Kallon subbing in...

September is too far away!

We still don't know *for sure* if we get Jabari back, but I hope we do. Sounds like he's a monster.

I'm banking on it... Hopefully won't be burned. For him to have to sit out all last year should be motivation to make the grades. Hope I'm right.

Sounds like it is still an uphill battle for JHD...hope he makes it...he needs it, and we need him....

Is it me, or does the picture for that article look like some illegal hands to the face?

I haven't got the sense that the battle is any more 'uphill' than anything else. CPJ expects him to be eligible FWIW. My assumption is that means at least somebody on the athletics staff has been paying attention to his grades.

If our currently eligible DL guys elevate their games, we could be mediocre. Then we need Hunt-Days, Whitehead, or a freshman to be eligible/good, if we're going to be a good defense. Our defense was just not that great last year by most measures (105th in yards per rush, 114th in 3rd downs, 6.32 yards per play, etc.) due to our weak DL.

A positive is we don't need much defensive improvement if our offense is near as good as last year.

If JHD is eligible next year that will make all the difference in the world. Gotsis is proven, Freeman will only get better (and bigger). Gamble gave our line a boost towards the end of last year.

With JHD, we would have 3 starting DL that could go to the next level between JHD, Freeman, & Gotsis. I could see Gotsis and JHD playing end and Freeman playing LB in a 3-4. That would be our strongest DL corps since 2008. But then again I thought the 2008 group underperformed at times...

Shaq Mason said that JHD was the best DL he played against last season. I hope he has a standout year.

Our offense going to have major growing pains. More I go back and watch some of last year Hill, Perkins, Zenon, Days, Laskey were all great for us last year and seniors. But think what those guys were as freshman. None played at least in the same position except Zenon and he still never did much till last year. We just won't have the depth in the backfield that we did last year even if snoddy, Andrews, legget all stay healthy. Defense going to have be really good early in the season.

l'll agree with this. It will take our new backs several games to get in sync and develop rhythm. Having a veteran defense will help the growing pains. One thing that keeps me optimistic for the offense is the offensive line. We'll be very deep and experienced there next year and that will help pave the way for breaking in new Bbacks. Perimeter blocking is scary right now, with new receivers and inexperienced a-backs. That was a big strength last year in having a bunch of veteran a-backs that fed off of each other and played as a team together.

the D will be WORSE than last year? Freeman putting on 40 lbs of muscle/speed and we are worse off?

All those freshman that played and now have orange bowl experience?

The offense and defense will be better than last year.

Only the loss of Shaq is a reason why the O takes a step back. That supporting cast that we lost only became great when JT assumed the QB spot. And they only got really good in the 2nd half of the season when JT started feeling the offense.

as long as JT is ready go we will be fine. That does not mean we will go undefeated however a trip to CLT is likely by any standard.

I love trips to the clt

Not even sure there will be a dropoff with Devine or Brown at RG. I'm at the point where I feel we are Wisconsin south where can plug any RBs behind this OL and JT5 they will ball out. DLine and finding a clutch go to WR should be our only concern

Devine was better than Shaq he just has not conditioning and can't keep his weight in check. Brown is a bigger version of Shaq. There might be a drop off in the first 2-3 games. But I doubt it.
