Is Richt getting an upgrade at the OC position?

Maybe. Maybe not.

We still gonna kick their ass

Anybody can call a play to give the ball to Chubb. Bobo was hated by all Georgia fans for whatever reason (not that he was great, but Georgia wasn't a bad team) I'm sure as soon as they lose one game Schott will be the new scape goat for fans to cry about. Or the DC. Either way, that is a toxic position.

Bobo was pretty öööö good

Hard to tell

No way Schott is even close on recruiting

Schotty does not have a compelling resume. We'll find out quickly, but with what will essentially be an interim QB, he'll be hard to judge. Well, that'll be his excuse anyway.

Schott is an NFL guy right? Maybe he doesnt realize that it is two separate games

Ive read that uga is starting a dynasty with these hires. Hardly.

Yeah, off the top of my head his most recent stop was the rams, his career longest with the jets. He has a long history of going places that are mediocre and doing mediocre, or going places that are any good and leaving quickly. He reminds me in that sense of Loeffler and in another sense of Kiffin, given he has a famous dad.

I've read long awfully boring debates about whether any of the mediocrity was his fault, but it sure doesn't seem like UGA is going to go plaid with this guy calling plays.

The thing with Kiffin is that the guy is a really good OC and play caller, but a terrible HC. Sure he cashed in on his daddy's name, but he's a öööö good OC.

Bobo was a solid play caller as well, but the thing with him was that you could always count on him making a bonehead call at some point in the season, such as the SC game last season.

I'm not at all sold on Kiffin as a play caller. His whole offense at Alabama was built around Amari Cooper (and tackle eligible trick plays) and when he started calling plays at USC they lost a defensive struggle to Washington State.

Don't get me wrong, he's still one of my all time favorite non-tech coaches. I just don't think he's done enough to get the solid playcaller label.

Disclaimer: I know next to nothing about football.

Seriously how hard is to pick from:

  • Left
  • Middle
  • Right
That's all he's going to do. Handoff the ball of to Chubb and tell him to go one of the above.

Kiffin sucks. Why is he still coaching?

CPJ would have given the ball to Chubb on second and third down in OT against us and won it that way.

I think Bobo was a good OC. UGA plays a traditional I offense with the many variations you can run out of this basic set. With Bobo they were not as versatile as say we were with Ralph as OC, but they were excellent at running certain bread and butter plays. They utilize fullbacks and tight ends effectively and know how to run the tailback successfully.
Of course, their mongrel fans have clamored for a more wide open offense, with more passing. They may get that now as they employ an OC with some NFL pedigree. I hope they do abandon their bread and butter and quit attacking with big tight ends and fullbacks in favor of throwing it around a lot with four wideouts.

There isn't going to be much of a change, Schottenheimer is going to run Richt's offense the same way that Bobo did.

See, that's kinda what I was wondering. How much influence do Richt's OCs actually have in dictating the actual offense and play calling?

Richt basically said at media days that he chose Schotty so the offense wouldn't change. Richt stopped playcalling years ago, but still doesn't want to see Georgia in an uptempo spread.

Right now invests all his time in coaching down his players. When you have a team of 4* and 5* players and still can't win the SEC East for 10 years...

We shall see. Historically NFL guys have floundered at the college level and college coaches have floundered at the NFL level. I think this is more likely going to be the case here because Schot was never known as a commodity in the NFL but spent his entire career there anyways. I don't think UGA fans got what they were looking for. If you hear them talk they now have the two best coordinators in CFB. Yes I read on boards that this actually been touted by a few of their fans. High praise for an OC that has called exactly zero plays in college. I guess they can't help themselves but throw hype at everything UGA without merit only to be let down harder than Petrino at a motorcycle convention.
