"Mix it up..." I would love to see us throw some jet sweeps and lots and play action, then switch to the power sets just as CC alluded to. I think you would really catch the D off guard and hopefully get some good mismatches relative to personnel and sub packages.
..
On Offense I'd like to see Fuller + Robinson + Hunter + Jones on a few packages..
maybe even add in Brown and go empty backfield once in a while. Loosen up the defense with some quick, high percentage passes, try to stretch the field a few times, and then switch to Prosise + Adams + 3 tight ends and pound it a while. Mix it up, run the clock, and keep Georgia Tech's offense off the field.

"If we run 2 high safeties against GT. We lose. There is no need to run 2 high against a team that throws less than 10 times a game unless it's 3rd and long.

"I agree. Single high safety, man-up on the outside, DBs don't even look back, hit the QB all day!

Vangorder's Defense...Shouldn't his defensive scheme be more complicated for opposing offenses versus our own Defense? Does it have to be so complicated against teams such as Navy and Georgia Tech?

Anyone who knows anything about football understands that at Safety their first step is back, to provide a safe last line of defense, hence the word. Why then do the ND safeties seem to bite so much? GT running play action has the potential to be a nightmare. I see both Redfield and Shumate fying up on the option to get burned over the top, such as the case last week and at LSU.

We will see how much of Bob Elliott's studying and planning for defending the option has paid off. Also, I think we will see the true worth of Sanford and how he handles Kizer.

I understand every team has injuries. But just about every injury for ND is season ending. I've never seen so much in a two year span. Soft tissue injuries, a sprain, a contusion, I get. But the amount of season ending injures has been surreal.

I coached 25 years, for whatever reason we had several teams run the triple option. There is obviously more than one way to attack but here are some of the principles we used. First, we ran a 4-3 with 2 safties. Our down tackles either both played a 3 tech or one played a 1 and the other a 3. If both are playing a 3 we pinched both tackles. Most of the time we were in a 1 and 3 with the 3 pinching. In the triple option the first read is the downtackle you will generally run the dive on the side of the 3 tech. The guard and center will combo the LB and the QB reads the down tackle. so if the down tackle doesn't pinch hard there goes your fullback up the middle. Second is the QB, as rule both ends played a 5 tech. Now your next decision is do you slow play the QB or do you immediately go after him every play. Most people would immediately say pop him as fast as you can, That may be true sometimes but not all of the time. By slowplaying the QB you give your safety time to roll up on the pitch or QB depending on what his read is that play. Also there are times when the wing will block down on the end to get the QB outside so you have to have more than one person assigned to the QB. In the secondary your Corners can play man which forces the Safety to definitely have pitch Sometimes your roll your corners so they have pitch and Safety has deep half. There are several ways to play obviously, but the key is to do your job. A QB will go the line and call the play. They are truly looking to see what the D is giving them. Thats why you'll notice that the short side of the field will determine what type of front you run, because you can use the sideline as your defender on the pitch. A triple option team wants to be in the middle of the field as much as possible. So every play every player has on the 3 options assigned to them. It differs on which Defense is called. That's why there is confusion sometime and thats what the triple option counts on. Whatever your responsibility is you can't get away from it. don't guess. Sounds easier than it is Just my two cents. Go Irish!

Vangorder should take his defense back to the NFL. Hire John Tenuata. This defense will not be able to stop GT, and look for more starters, on defense this time, to go out for the season. This defense is not what you think it is. To win this game ND is going to have to score 40 plus points. That is not going to happen. 2-1 heading to UMass. A 9-3 season would be the best possible scenario for this team.

Is there a way to make a minimum post count before newbs can start threads in the football forum?

I lost consciousness while reading that post. I just woke up in a Whataburger parking lot.

Should read: "We're worried. You're in our brain."

We should throw under coverage. It'll make 'em crazy as hell. Guaranteed win.

I love how all these fanbases think all GT plays are Triple Option -- it only makes it more delicious watching their front 7 on roller skates all second half against called Dives, Bellys, counters and midline. Not to mention a game-long dose of rocket-toss

I think it said something about pinching 1. It also said something about "high school defense".......then I quit reading.

This guy nails it:

"My team ran the flexbone on offense & I played LB & safety on D so I got to see it every day. I remember what worked the best against the offense. If the other team had "superior" athletes & just played base D & beat the man across from them & didn't try to be a hero & get a 5 yard loss on every play but be okay with giving up 2 yards each play they would shut our offense down.
What helped the offense was when the other team played hero ball.
All you need to do is break down into tackling position & don't pass the line of scrimmage. Two yard gains are fine."

They figured it out. If our opponents force a 5 yard loss every down, we're in trouble. I'm surprised no one thought of that before.

:turbonoes: I'm thinking we should forfeit. No point in showing up now.
