Why Not Reverse the Outcome of the Duke Game?

FSU was holding on the kick we managed to block.

Can't believe no one realizes the main reason why they won't reverse the call. 1 word.

Vegas.

Honestly, Vegas wouldn't cross the ACC office's mind at all. Not sure how many people were betting on the Miami/Duke moneyline anyway. Miami covered either way on the spread.

It would be an interesting case for the Nevada gambling authorities. The casinos can't go after most of the winning bettors and get the payout back. Nevada would probably rule that the original, on-field result would hold, regardless of future rulings.

But it does show why reversing a game outcome is dumb. Imagine an ACCCG ending that way. All the trophies, rings and t-shirts would be handed out, and the ACC would ask for them back if they reversed the ruling. There has to be finality, for the players, fans, Vegas, etc.

The photo of the knee on the ground and the ball not yet lateraled is compelling evidence. But, the touchdown signaled on the QB sneak may be just as dubious. It is unbelievable that we did not get a camera on the goal line for a view of that play. The great failure of Saturday night was the poor video feed. We let the likely game winning TD stand on what would have been the last play of the game by reviewing from a corner camera ten yards from the goal line. We reviewed whether the knee was down seeing only a replay from the back, which was not conclusive. If we are going to have replay, get the right cameras there and have them get the right angles on plays. The video work was unacceptable for both of these game changing plays.

Bad calls are part of the game. If you reverse one game because of some bad calls, you'll open it up for each losing team challenging games because one bad call.

As an official, this is it.

Bad calls are part of the game.

That said, in some situations, a forfeit is appropriate because the call is simply so egregious (Missouri-Colorado in 1990).

In this situation, I don't think the officials made the wrong call. Duke fans are using a favorable angle to suggest that he's down. He probably was. But it isn't indisputable. The ACC is just catering to Duke and alienating another ACC member by their antics. The officials won't be pleased with this either. I'm sure they'll be replaced with more pro-Carolina cheaters.

Here, however, Dook, who got very favorable calls throughout the game, should be burned and razed to the ground.

Also, it's understandable how the block in the back would be missed. The block in the back happened after the ball was pitched and action was moving away from the block. It didn't affect the play at all, which is why refs didn't notice it.

Maybe if it didn't take 9 minutes to review and the ref didn't bungle the explanation, it would be alright. But it reminds me of SEC suspending the refs for Jasper Sanks. The SEC expected superhuman vision before replay, I suppose.

The NCAA has set the precedent to vacate wins. It could certainly do so in this case if it felt the error that egregious.

And the missed block in the back highlighted in post #19 below was egregious and in front of the play. Its the biggest single error I see the officials made.

If you say don't call penalties away from the ball, welcome to sanctioned thuggery away from the ball.

As others have said, they aren't going to review one play and overule it without reviewing every questionable play in the whole game. And they clearly aren't going to do that so the discussion is moot.

Not to mention the phantom block in the back in the ND/Colorado game.

Really? Has there been a game vacated or reversed after the fact based on an incorrect refereeing decision or something else that happened on the field?

So why did you suggest before that it had happened?

In fact the rules say the score is final once the ref declares the game has ended.

The NCAA has vacated wins for other types of violations (how quickly we forget). They could just expand the process to include officiating mistakes. Stroke of the pen.

I hear that it works out really well and everyone is satisfied when wins are vacated as punishment. Agree we could use more of it.

This group deserves the JC Louderback treatment. Toss 'em all out.

And the crew that officiated the Jasper Sanks fumble

Stupid me.

I just realized the OP was talking about the last 2 GT vs puke games:biggthumpup:

Yes, of course, the results should be reversed. I have no problem with GT footing the bill of having every play by every player involved reviewed.

No doubt we can find a basis to find a way for GT to win last year's game where we had our best record in quite a while, and yet still lost to nobody puke & unc. Thank heavens for ugag game.

Speaking of changing the outcome after the fact, our ACC championship was changed, and our trophy was confiscated.

But ladies and gentlemen, our degrees will not be overturned, and our diplomas will not be confiscated..
