We made shooting ourselves in the dick an art form

The defense was fantastic last night. They scored a third of our points, and only gave up 7 points on 3 consecutive fumbles. They certainly did enough to win.

Even after all the offensive incompetence we still had a shot in the end until Errin Joe had an aneurysm.
Agreed. We forced them to punt 5 times. The D kept the game close with the stops and the pick 6. Though, I didn't like the soft coverage at times. Too many medium passes we gave up for easy yards.

Obviously I'm biased, but couldn't the refs have just let Erin's shove go with a warning? I mean, he didn't throw a punch. He didn't even really hit the guy. He shoved him and it would have looked like nothing if VT player hadn't been off balance and gone down. Yes, Erin shouldn't have done it. But calling a PF (and on something that wasn't that rough in football terms) effectively ends the game. Or how bout call the VT player for delay of game (wrestling for the ball after the whistle) and have off setting penalties?

I realize Erin was wrong. And I realize I'm whining. I just wish we could have seen Butker make an attempt.

ND - deer in headlights, missed FGs
Duke - 13 points given up on special teams
UNC - blow a 21 point lead at home
Clemson - get beat like a normal team
Pittsburgh - throw a pick on the drive to tie after 56 yard field goal
Virginia - made a terrible team look good
Virginia Tech - dumb personal foul takes you out on the final drive

Yup, lots of tripping on our dicks this season. It isn't like we are light years away from having a good season, we're just finding new and creative ways to lose.

Last night we had it rolling in the first quarter. Then we lost our minds. This season doesn't make sense.

Yeah, I could have made a laundry list for several of the games. We threw more passes with the lead last night than I remember. We also pitched the ball to a guy with a cast on one hand and a defender in his face - surprise - he fumbled. Point being, other teams aren't dominating us, we're essentially doing enough to win most games but screwing ourselves.

All this in front of the 1990 team...maybe the distance between the team now and the team then was too much to overcome

When did Marshall get hurt? 2nd quarter sometime wasn't it?

The biggest thing though, was that the VT DE were just ling our tackles.

On D, we didn't have an answer for their TE/WR or their running back. That, and it goes without saying that we got very little pressure on their qb (who is prone to making mistakes under pressure).

We weren't far from having one of those last night - maybe next game, you'll have to watch to find out!
Almost! I almost kicked a hole in the tv. Thinking about it now, I wished I did kick a hole in it so I could have missed out on the rest!

What really is amazing is that the psyche will try to protect itself. You can only be disappointed so many times before you stop caring. Some react by taking a family vote and telling people on a message board they are no longer Georgia Tech fans. Others try to distance themselves from being disappointed by attacking other fans or the coaches. But it's natural after a series of disappointments to just be less invested in the outcome.

Georgia Tech manages to circumvent this defense mechanism, and that is where we truly ascend to artform status. We have just enough success to make you think it's possible you won't be disappointed this time around. For me, peak disappointment was the 2011 season. Multiple OT losses to division rivals & MTSU, somehow making the ACCCG only to lose on the final drive.

After that season, my Ex would make we write down a list of the most disappointing losses I've seen as a GT fan before each season to remind myself not to get to invested. Psyche protected. Then 2014 comes along and brings me fully back on board in time to be crushed this year. It seems even the FSU win just came along to get our hopes back up one more time. See for GT fans, even our great seasons or games only exist to give us enough hope that we can be crushed again. That is what makes GT football a masterful work of art.

FWIW, CPJ seemed sympathetic to Joe, much moreso than Attachou. He viewed the call as very borderline and said "I guess you have to keep your cool," in a sort of resigned way. VT was badgering and pushing the line on the whistle all game.

Because an OL should push two DL who have standing over his QB way after the whistle.

That should have been an unsportsman like on Joe and a Taunting on the DE, offsetting penalties.

Well, here's the thing. When we make these mistakes, it's not like every other team in the nation is playing perfectly. Allen dropping the pass wasn't the first time in history a running back dropped a pass. The unsportsmanlike against Joe wasn't the first personal foul against an OL in history.

FSU had four false starts, an illegal procedure and two bad snaps when they played us. Could you imagine what would happen if the teams were reversed? How much crap would CPJ have received about the false starts? It's not like Jimbo Fisher forgot how to coach. But he has an extremely young OL.

I'm sure this post and others seem too Pollyannish. But it's also true that CPJ can't cut somebody unfocused and pick up somebody new on waivers. Just like all other coaches, he can't control players like robots. It's not to say there aren't coaches who really do a worse job than other coaches, and should be replaced. A Charlie Weis or a Paul Hewitt really could not get the same level of recruiting or execution as other coaches, and that was clear.

But it's also not possible for every team to go 15-0. Somebody has to lose every game. It's not sustainable for every school in the country to continually fire coaches until they become Bama.

There are bad teams and good teams. But most bad teams are just bad. Their fans stop watching or caring. I don't think Wake Forest fans are that upset after losses. Our team has perfected the sweet spot of being bad while playing just well enough to draw you in.

This year, for sure. Vegas is either in on it or victim to it, too - we've been favored in all but 2 games (and we won one of the ones we weren't favored in).

At least we have achieved excellence in something.

Plus, we have launched the careers of hundreds of great football players and coaches - just very few of them at GT.
