Georgia Tech offensive lineman Errin Joe’s attempt to extend his career one extra season has been denied by the NCAA, much like quarterback Tim Byerly’s request for an additional season was turned down last week.

Joe, who missed the 2011 season as a redshirt, the 2013 season due to a preseason shoulder injury and half of the 2012 season with a foot injury, learned his fate Monday.

“I would have loved to have played another year,” Joe said Wednesday. “I was really excited about the whole opportunity.”

Joe, who had been working out with the team in hopes of hearing good news, said he will return home to Lakeland, Fla., and begin training for Tech’s pro day. Joe sought to have his eligibility extended to a sixth year, having missed two seasons with the redshirt and shoulder injury. He also missed the final seven games of the 2012 season (including the postseason) with a foot injury.

The NCAA can grant a sixth year – athletes typically have five years to complete four seasons of competition – when athletes lose more than one year due to circumstances beyond their control. Tech attempted to demonstrate the 2012 season was also lost due to injury, but the NCAA did not agree. Joe suffered a season-ending injury in the seventh game of the season, one game too late in the season by the rules regarding medical redshirts.

Joe thanked Tech’s compliance office and coach Paul Johnson for their effort and support of his pursuit of a waiver. In addition to his pro-day preparation, Joe said he also has an internship lined up with Russell Athletic.

His career ends with 27 games played, 16 starts and a prominent role in helping the Jackets win 11 games in the 2014 season, including the Orange Bowl. He earned his degree in literature, media and communication last December and was in the midst of obtaining a second degree in economics.

“I know I gave it my all for Tech,” Joe said. “I’ll forever be a Yellow Jacket. Whatever the program needs from me as an alum, I’ll do it.”

Sounds like there is a set rule in place for the maximum number of games you have to play in to have a season considered lost to injury, and his 2012 season was above that limit.

This is one of the few times the NCAA is acting reasonably and going based on cut and dry rules rather than making interpretations up as they go along.

Here's to you, Mr. Joe. Go Jackets.

Shouldn't we all attack Russell Athletic now? Maybe he can help them and they are helping our athlete.

For a long time, I tried to overcome my emotions and believe that the NCAA was an organization dedicated to fairness and integrity. I thought it made some bad mistakes and employed some prejudiced people, but felt that those were just exceptions.

Now, I have seen too much evidence. The NCAA does not care about student athletes or schools with academic integrity.

Instead, the NCAA seems to punish schools with academic integrity and favor the football factories like Alabama, Auburn and Georgia, schools where it doesn't matter whether the athletes can even read or write.

I think those schools should form their own organization and just be minor league farm teams for the NFL. But they shouldn't get to call their players student athletes.

The NCAA is more hypocritical than the Democratic or Republican parties. And I can't think of anything worse to say about it.

They're unfair because they followed the established rule about the maximum number of games you can play in and still call a season fully lost to injury?

well we played 14 games that season so it could be argued that the completion of the 7th game was mid-season.

Joe missed 2.5 seasons. Ruling the 1/2 season had nothing to do with him missing the other two years.

Personally, I think they should just say you've got 5 years from your first practice, with no exceptions.

I believe Joe was penciled in as the backup BBack had Allen gone down in the Miami game.

Wasn't Byerly hurt in game 2? Why was he denied?

His first missed year was due to a transfer, not an injury, and the NCAA recognized that as not meeting the intent of the rule (from what I understand of the situation).

I wish this guy all the luck on earth but can't figure out why a few people are getting butthurt that a guy from the 2015 OL isn't returning in 2016.

My understanding is that the approval rate on these 6th year waivers is really, really low.

The rules are pretty clear that you have 5 years to play 4, barring extreme circumstances, and injuries aren't usually covered by that.

You really think it's just the players on the OL that were the problem? Errin Joe was a highly sought-after recruit (Rivals Link). Sewak has been subpar since arriving in 2008, with the exception of last year when Shaq Mason made him look good. You don't get better by losing highly-recruited, experienced upperclassmen.

The players on the OL were a big part of the problem. And Joe was supposed to step up.

He really didn't. I'm not crying over this.
