Eight Teams

It would be nice, but until the contract expires, I don't see it happening. There would have to be some massive realignment to make that happen.

I saw this the other day and I agree with him. 5 conference champions and 3 teams at large. I think it would be perfect. The rankings would still matter obviously for the at large teams but none of the stupid drama regarding the conference champions. Quarterfinals can start on 12/17, semifinals on 12/24 and we can still have the final on 1/9. Wouldn't be any longer than current format and add 4 more high stakes bowls. More tv revenue. It's dumb to not implement this.

5 conference Champs and 3 SEC wildcards sounds great to me.

It's better than dumb öööö like this:

In any case they will most likely have 2 SEC teams in an 8 team playoff. Not 3 or 4.

I don't think it would add bowls, I think the quarterfinals and semifinals would rotate between Rose, Sugar, Orange, Fiesta, Peach, and Cotton.

So which bowls will volunteer to be played in mid-December. And I think Akinji was trolling with the 12/24 suggestion, right?

I like the 4-team format. At least one of the big 5 conferences will get left out every year. That makes regular season out-of-conference matchups still matter a great deal, while also keeping the benefit of a playoff format to prevent there ever being another horridly boring SEC/SEC rematch title game. In an 8-team format, teams are going to start mailing in their performances for every SEC/ACC matchup.

The only thing I'd change from the present format is:
  • No selection committee. If the playoff was one step forward, the special-interest-cluster**** that is the selection committee was three steps backward.
  • Go back to using the computer formulae from the BCS mix. Calculate which of the 6 is the greatest outlier and throw it out, then use the other 5 to make an average ranking. If one computer poll is the outlier two years in a row, it gets replaced by another and can't re-enter the mix for at least 2 seasons.
  • Using computer polls, the top 4 conference champs get in. One independent can play if they are in the top 4 overall. If you are in a conference and can't win it, you can't play for the big prize.

I always love his graphic. Final games for these teams that year:

GT beat miss st by double digits
Ole miss lost to TCU by 39
Auburn lost to Wisconsin
Alabama loses to Ohio st.

Nice top 4, Skip!

Could only be good for us.
For one, we have a way better shot at getting in in a "top 8" scenario.
Paul also knows once we got into a playoff, we have a chance to start kicking some ass against teams with only 1 week of prep.

Pretty good point. We have been known to win the conference on occasion.

I would prefer an eight team playoff with the first round played at the higher seed's home stadium, but I don't think there's a big problem with what we have now. It's far, far better than just having two teams in it.
