Bill Curry gives his opinion about the problem with GT athletics in the context of hiring an AD.

Something I did not know:

Tech’s president was so detached from athletics the last time the school went through an athletic director search that he basically let one booster run the show and make the hire. How’d that turn out?

Yep, Peterson pretty much let Steve Zelnak run the committee and had little to no involvement in the actual interviews of the candidates.

Bobinski was hired following a three-month, nationwide search. A seven-member committee led by Stephen P. Zelnak Jr. advised Peterson and identified candidates.

Couple of things.
GT has plenty of money, but compared to other schools our AA is spit on by the Hill. Except of course when they want a bunch of free trips to Ireland, the Orange Bowl, or Final Fours

Sometimes (ha!) you have to take what writers say with a grain of salt. Schultz STILL does not know that Doug Weaver hired Curry. Curry was hired before Rice got to GT.

I wrote a letter to the Pres back when Curry was being considered saying that one of the most important things in a new AD was finding someone who didn't see GT as a stepping stone but as the capstone of his career. I feel vindicated.

Of course, we are here talking about a coach who used GT as a stepping stone to the Alabama job...

Yeah. I mean, who wouldn't view the GT job as a better job. What a disloyal turd!

He ended up getting what he deserved over there so it is all good (not in that anybody deserves to be treated like that but in that he should have known those people are nuts before he went - if I put my hand on a stove burner I deserve to get burned)

Peterson doesn't know what to look for. Most of the posters on here are more qualified to make a hiring decision.

Yeah Bill Curry lost his input rights when he left for Alabama. Maybe they can use some of his insight.

Go Jackets!

In Bill Curry's defense, I believe I read that he was making around $50k a year as head coach of GT. I am sure Alabama more than doubled it, perhaps tripled or more.

What would happen if we made a serious effort, as StingTalkers, to submit a list of candidates we find acceptable. Would Peterson listen?

If we made a serious effort and could demonstrate competency in the area, I'm sure his staff would pass it on to the search committee. We would need a large number of alumni signers (hundreds), though.

That's basically how Paul Johnson got hired. Who's on the search committee again?

Would believe the current issue is with Mr. Peterson and his myopic focus on himself.

Let's get a President that is for Tech and see what happens.
