What happened in 1991?

I was born in 1989, so I was too young to remember the glorious 1990 season. What I don't understand is what happened in 1991. Why couldn't we maintain the momentum from the season before. Most of the leaders of the 1990 team returned like Shawn Jones, Ken Swilling, Willie Clay, Scott Sisson, etc.
Was 91 similar to last season in that we suffered a lot of injuries, or was it a case where our guys got too complacent? Hopefully some of you that were around can help answer.

Opened with a loss to Penn State. Then didn't do much better against ranked opponents going forward.

Exactly. Those that want a tough OOC should remember that lesson. Whole season derailed by one game. Remember other opening game losses over the years. USCe, BC (pre ACC), one of the Arizonas, among many over the years.

Know one of the players from that time, he said some of the team started thinking their poop didn't stink. Ross left pretty quickly after that.

We were also without William Bell, who was suspended for the year. He would have made a huge difference.

But WHY does that happen to us each time at Tech when we have success?

We lost 20 seniors from that team, all but one was a redshirt Sr and most were in the two-deep. Both offense and defensive lines were devastated from graduation and key defensive backs were lost in addition to Bell.

You have to remember the difference between us and the Bamas, LSUs etc. is that they have a lot of depth and we don't. In 1990, it was basically a perfect storm: schedule that played out perfectly (followed the #1 UVA win playing a subpar VT team that we were still able to beat, even though we were overlooking them) and few injuries. If we had a couple of injuries to the DL in 1990, we would have been toast. But, in 1991 we weren't able to sneak up on anyone and we had a couple of players who didn't play that could have made the difference in games (in 1990 we beat CU by 2, UVA by 3, VT by 3 and NC St. by a TD....in 1991 we lost to CU by 2, UGA by 3, and NCst by a TD)....

I'll take an 8-5 after winning the national championship.
Yes, it wasn't a horrible year, beat Stanford Christmas Day in Hawaii. Disappointing, but it got worse the next year. Take it over 3-9 every day.

1992 started out OK. They had FSU beat in the first meeting as conference rivals. Then FSU put in Charlie Ward, recovered two on-side kicks, won the game, and everything went downhill from there.

Was that the game we blew a 21 point fourth quarter lead?
