What happened in 1991?

All those things that others have mentioned.

Problem now, in addition, are the message boards if in fact players read them.

To whatever extent message boards are a problem or a benefit in college football, they are much less of a problem or benefit at GT than at other schools.

Well, you're looking at a sample size of two, so I'd say random chance.
1957, 1971, 1991 (and '92), 1999 (sort of), 2001, 2010, 2015

We've only been ranked in the AP top 25 preseason poll 14 times, and 6 of those were 1952-57.

Since then....

1971 - preseason 17th, finished 6-6 (unranked)
1991 - preseason 8th, finished 8-5 (unranked)
1992 - preseason 23rd, finished 5-6 (unranked)
1999 - preseason 11th, finished 8-4 (ranked 20th)
2001 - preseason 10th, finished 8-5 (ranked 24th)
2009 - preseason 15th, finished 11-3 (ranked 13th)
2010 - preseason 16th, finished 6-7 (unranked)
2015 - preseason 16th, finished 3-9 (unranked)

OP - I get it, you weren't there and it is a legit question but, holy öööö, this is a thread for middle of the offseason.

There's a ööööing game in four days. No one wants to go down a 1991-92 memory lane right now.

Get your mind rite.

GO JACKETS!

1991 was my freshman year. By all accounts everyone was really excited to be returning the team we had. I think everyone thought we would curb stomp Penn St. in the Meadowlands if you asked a GT fan. But I think PSU was actually slightly favored in the game. This was back in the day where Joe Pa Penn State teams were always perennial top 10 teams and vying for consideration as a NC contestant. Penn State started the season ranked #7, GT was #8. Penn State's defense really just did what they wanted to, created turnovers and controlled the game from front to back. At no point was GT really in it. Penn State ended the season ranked #3 nationally. I think GT ended the season ranked #25 after the bowl game win against Stanford. William Bell stole text books and had to sit out a year. Jimy Lincoln came in as a true frosh and played well but never repeated that success.

At the end of the year Boss Ross left to go to San Diego Chargers. Bill Lewis was hired. No one really thought he was a great hire. He had one miracle season at ECU with a bunch of average ones at best. 1992 we started out 4-1 with close wins over Clemson and NCST but with a bad loss to UVA. Back then UVA was consistently one of the best teams in the ACC and always ranked in the top 10-20. We played FSU in their first year in the ACC. Charlie Ward brutalized us in the 4th quarter and we lost an absolute heartbreaker. One of the hardest losses I've seen next to the 1997 UGA game.

At the end of the FSU game in the locker room, Bill Lewis was interviewed and he basically crapped all over his players and blamed the players for the loss. It was at that moment that he lost the team completely. We lost 4 of the last 5 games with our only win coming at Duke in a close game. This was back when Duke was more terrible than you recall ten years ago. Lewis was never able to get the support of his kids back and after Shawn Jones left, he opted to play Luginbill over Donnie Davis who was the best recruit GT had ever gotten at QB. By doing so, he further lost confidence of the players. They basically laid down on him after that.

while Luginbill decision did split the team, he did win ACC Freshman of the Year i think, or stte
but Davis was the team choice, i agree
it was a disaster all around by the end of year one for B*** L****

I was born in 1989, so I was too young to remember the glorious 1990 season. What I don't understand is what happened in 1991. Why couldn't we maintain the momentum from the season before. Most of the leaders of the 1990 team returned like Shawn Jones, Ken Swilling, Willie Clay, Scott Sisson, etc.
Was 91 similar to last season in that we suffered a lot of injuries, or was it a case where our guys got too complacent? Hopefully some of you that were around can help answer.
Nobody mentioned the 9-7 loss to Clemson in 1991. Scott Sisson missed a last second field goal that would have won the game, 10-9. They said he slipped on some sand. It would have been a whole different season in 1991 had Tech won that game IMHO.

'91 was a huge disappointment. It was a good season, but so many hoped Ross had us ready to be a national power. The Bell suspension was huge. We lost offensive linemen like Lavin and Siffri who were terrific leaders and McClary on the defensive line was a big loss. My instincts tell me the pre-season work ethic had not been as good as the previous year. I was at the Meadowlands and Penn State was certainly better prepared to start the season. We have struggled to follow up great years with another great year. If you had told me leaving Orlando that the next year's team would lose 5, I would have said you were crazy.

This incredibly depressing post will NOT dent my enthusiasm following the radio show tonight.

Not meant to be depressing; if anything this year sets up as a situation where we have succeeded in the past!

Go back to the Citrus Bowl trip to Orlando. That's where it started and that's when Bobby Ross got fed up with the college game. I think he decided after that trip to go to the NFL if he could. There was a big flare up with the players at the team Christmas Eve party in Orlando. 35 or 40 players were complaining to Brian Baker about their grievances, Willie Clay and Bobby Rodriguez were especially angry. Ross has been quoted as saying he was ready to resign after the Citrus Bowl game it was so bad.

I was living in Myrtle Beach then, and unable to follow GT sports. What were the player's issues as mentioned above?

According to Jack Wilkinson's book, the coaches and administrators families were there but not the players families. NCAA forbid the colleges from paying for families. Some players wee offended at the order of presentations and gifts at the party. Spending money, getting new football shoes, rumors about cars and spending money from other schools bowl trips but Tech only gave the NCAA per diem of $20. Go find the book "Focused on the Top" by Jack Wilkinson. Read page 123-127. It's a great book. It starts in season 87 and goes to the Citrus bowl.
