A Little History

This is awesome. Our traditions have held strong. I still sing "to cheer the brave and bold" instead of "to raise the ratio". Anyone here know when the Budweiser song became a part of our tradition and why?

I've never heard anyone sing to raise the ratio. Is that really a thing? Is that some gold standard, sjw bs?

It's been common since at least 2000 when I started. It's exactly the opposite of SJW bullshit - who else are the mostly male student body going to get naked with after they fight, win, and drink?

Nobody sang 'to raise the ratio' when I was in undergrad, but I was in the Bill Lewis years mostly so nobody sang at all.

I've heard the students singing 'to raise the ratio' for at least a decade. It's not a new thing.

I started then too and I've never heard it, or at least never heard it actually sung by anyone at a game.

"To improve the ratio". A nod towards the wookies that used to attend tech.

If I had a barrel of rum and sugar three thousand pounds
A sorority girl to come over and then she'd drink it down
She'll drink up all my whiskey
And then she'll drink up all my beer
And then she'll fall down right on her rear!

She's a twiddly twat from Agnes Scott and she'll screw for fifty cents....

So you knew my ex-wife.

I always thought that 'Up with the White and Gold" was "stolen" from Cal when we played them in the Rose Bowl in 1929. But I guess not!

There used to be a playing of Dixie. During Coach Dodd's later years, that was removed. This is well recorded in history.

This is where one's memory gets a little fuzzy. Not sure if Dixie was directly replaced by the Budweiser song, or that it took a few years to sort it self out. Recall that it was played in the late 70's.

Maybe someone with a better recollection can fill in the details.

In 1970, athletic director Bobby Dodd requested that the band no longer play Dixie at basketball games. Dodd later extended this request to football games as well. You've Said It All (Budweiser) was substituted for Dixie as the song played at the end of the third quarter of football games and during a later timeout in the second half of basketball games. The song was chosen because of the popularity of the song when the band had played it as part of an advertisement for the Atlanta Beverage Company.

It has also been said the choosing the Budweiser song had something to do with Bud Carson being the head coach at the time.

The band played both Dixie and the Budweiser song during football games when I was at Tech (71-76).

Big game coming up. Here is a little inspirational audio from a long time ago (1925; for those who have never heard it before):

If this doesn't fill you with pride, you have no soul (the Golden Tornado went 6-2-1 in 1925, and beat Georgia).

That is absolutely fantastic
