In large stretches, anyways. An extremely opportunistic defense, a ball-monopolizing sure-fire offense, running up the middle against an opponent that is slowly losing their minds on the sidline until the big play breaks and kills their will to live. That's the magic. That's what makes me believe Paul Johnson is still here in force.

I believe this team can win 9 games this season. We did that with backups and true freshmen. We have the willpower to crush everyone left. I'm happier with my football team than I ever expected to be this season.

Go Jackets!

I would recommend not getting too over your skis about this win, because Tech benefited greatly from the hot trash masquerading as a QB that the Hokies trotted out on the field and was handing out interceptions like Pez. A competent QB will probably still carve up Tech's defense.

With that said, the defensive line IS taking steps forward and I really think Lance Austin, in particular, has really started to move forward on the back end of the defense. He's trusting his athleticism, getting his head around, and making plays. As for the linebackers, having PJ Davis back healthy makes all the difference.

I wasn't entirely surprised that Jordan and the offense played well, either. I think that even though Jordan doesn't give you the same big play threat that Thomas does, because he can run the mid line stuff and keep getting you solid chunks of yardage he absolutely allows them to play a ball control style that shortens the game and protects the defense (from itself?). The textbook of that was Miami in 2014, and I've been hoping that the team would shorten the game against some of their quality opponents earlier this year like Clemson. This is the formula for Tech most years against quality opponents, because not only does shortening the game protect your defense by putting them on the field for fewer plays, but it also puts pressure on the opposing offense to maximize their fewer plays/possessions and those young kids then start to press and make mistakes.

A great win, and I remember thinking several times during the game that we looked like 2014 GT.
