Not bad....still don't think he'll get the recruits to make it a big time program though

CPJ can stay here as long as he wants.

My favorite thing about CPJ is that his teams never quit. I sat in on a practice at RB field his first season here in '08 and remember him yelling "this team's gotta get tough!!" all day long. It's instilled in the program. Love it.

We will never be tOSU, Alabama, et. al. If playing in the ACCCG on average every 3 years, winning one, and a major bowl occasionally isn't "big time" enough, this is the wrong program for you.

We had 2 10 win seasons in the 40 years before Johnson got here...and in both cases the coach left for a better job 2-3 years later.
Yet if only we make the right hire we will average 10 wins forever!

I think this article is wrong. It makes it sound like most Tech fans have wanted him to leave which I don't believe is the case. An analogy would be the press stating Hillary would win easily with a 91% probability - but there were a lot of voters who kept their mouth shut and voted for the other guy. I think CPJ is well respected by most Tech fans (the ones that care) and has never been seriously on the "hot seat". He never has been with me.

I hope Johnson stays here until he retires. People who don't like the offense should look at the results and just be happy with that.

For my understanding, the $ guys like him and realize the great job he's done. Now, knuckleheads on a message board that don't contribute to the program financially on the other hand...

I don't want him gone, but it's bad logic to compare modern coaching success with the past based on wins per season. Take out a win per year since schedules expanded to 12, not to mention conference championship games and national semis, to make it more apples to apples. No sense in touting division championships either since previous coaches didn't have the opportunity. Those are great accomplishments, but don't mention them to boost Johnson's resume against Ross and O'Leary.

Does he still have the best winning percentage at this point in his career compared to other Tech coaches?

The vocal minority want him gone.

Probably this. If you go on twitter (and presumably facebook) during or after a game we lose, you'll see tons of folks that say one of the following:

FIRE CPJ
NEED A BETTER COACH
WHY CAN'T WE RECRUIT
SOMETHING SOMETHING PRO STYLE OFFENSE

There was one guy in particular who loved to whine on twitter, had to mute him eventually. Wish I could remember his handle so I could post some of his stuff on his. Guy was completely bonkers. Probably actually a dwag troll like THWG247 is saying.

That dwag troll that Twitter stalked Vad Lee hasn't posted anything since September 2014. Maybe he diaf'd like some asked him to. :scared:

Why shouldn't we take out a loss per year?

I just updated one of my spreadsheet graphics from a legendary ST post regarding winning percentage. The winning percentage is calculated based on regular season games only, and a 5- year moving average is also included. There's no denying that CPJ's percentage has crept into CCG levels these past few years. But, the past 20 years are more like the Dodd years than the post-Dodd years of the 1960s thru 1990s.

I would say our extra game is used to schedule teams like Tulane, Vandy, Ga Southern, etc., generally a team we should beat to help our bowl eligibility. When we lose this extra game, it's considered an embarrassment (MTSU, Kansas).

I would say conference wins or conference win % would be a better comparison, at least since we joined the ACC. I really have no idea how CPJ would compare to past coaches using this criteria, but it wouldn't be artificially inflated like season win total.

Actually that isn't true. I would have to go back and look in detail, but I seem to recall that when I pulled all that data together, we still played 2 weak teams pretty much every year. Of course in the 1940-50s it is difficult to know which teams were good and which weren't.

In 1952, for example, we played Citadel and Florida State. FSU was not Division I at that time. That was out of 11 regular season games.

In 1947, we played VMI, Citadel and Furman out of 10 regular season games. Didn't give up a point to any of them.

So, it is not really fair to say subtract an easy win, because Dodd scheduled his fair share of easy wins, believe me.
