Can ESPN Survive?

You have to have a subscription to something to use WatchESPN. They do not derive additional revenue out of anyone that uses it. I guess at some point they may sell a standalone subscription to it, but at what monthly price?

I'll take two.

Think ESPN is going to have Trump fill out a bracket? There you go. I'd probably have already ditched ESPN and everyone else if my wife didn't want all these ööööty Hallmark/Lifetime/Bravo/etc channels.

Hook her on Netflix. Easy peasy.

And just like that, DirecTV is raising rates $6 per month. I blame ESPN, Obama and Vad Lee.

http://www.espn.com/blog/ombudsman/...espn-dealing-with-changing-political-dynamics

Ombudsman says basically the same thing about ESPN being too political. "Tolerance" can be an excuse for anything.
But Jemele Hill, co-host of ESPN2’s His & Hers, isn’t buying that. “I would challenge those people who say they feel suppressed,” she said. “Do you fear backlash, or do you fear right and wrong?”

Another double down on "you're not just different, you're wrong." They just don't get it.

You have to remember that when you talk about ESPN you're not just talking about ESPN. You're talking about ABC, talking about Disney. DISNEY. It's much bigger than just ESPN, and they can afford to do just about anything they want (and they have) to grab as much of the sports market as they possibly can.

You also likely have no idea just how many people use their streaming services. With more and more people cutting cable, you can still watch nearly everything on WatchESPN. I think that from a monetary standpoint, ESPN is ahead of the curve and they've anticipated the cord-cutting very well.

Do I like ESPN? No. It's not what it used to be and no matter which side you're on politically, it's annoying to have a sports network push a particular agenda. But they're not dumb business people.

Disney has the same problem the Dems have. They think their future is in delivering content tailored to hyper-segmented minority factions - Mulan, Queen of Katwe, Moana, etc. It will be their downfall. And before the "Moana set new records" please correct for average ticket price.

ESPN is desperately pushing for 3 B1G teams to make the playoffs which is a complete joke.

The Nielsen numbers on ESPN subscribers don't take into account Sling, Playstation Vue, etc. I'm not sure how big of difference it is, but anecdotally I know I'm one of those cord-cutters who actually still pays ESPN subscription fees through Sling.

That's true but there are likely fewer than 2 million subscribers for those services. Sling has 1 million, and they didn't all join this year, so the losses are still significant.

On Dish Network, you can subscribe to a base package that does not include ESPN. That's the coming wave.

On a related topic, I have Playstation Vue and I turned to the NFL network to watch the Thursday night game last night. There was a message stating that Vue did not have an agreement in place to stream that program on the internet. WTF? Why even have the NFL network if that's the case? I hope that policy doesn't spread. You could have ESPN on an online service but have random games blacked out.

lol Disney is fine. Their Marvel movies are crushing it, and they bought the Star Wars rights for much less than it's worth...probably already in the black on that one.
