#1 Alabama Crimson Tide vs. #48 the best HS football team in Vermont

Good idea

first round bye unless the Catamounts show up.

and is vermont the only state without a Div I football team? is there no end to their öööötiness?

  • Use the BCS computer ranking average
  • Top 4 conference champs
  • If an independent is ranked in the top 7 *and* is higher than one of the top 4 conference champs, they get in over the 4th highest conference champ

OSU, lol. Good to know that the actual games played mean absolutely nothing next to the almighty "eye test."

You do know they had a better record and strength of schedule right? Computers had osu higher too

Or force the P5 + independents into a P4 and the conference champs make the playoff.

G5 conferences become a subdivision with their own champion.

That'll never happen. They didn't put the conference champion in this year even though they were arguably the hottest team out there not coached by Saban.

I know, but it's the obvious answer.

Except that ESPN doesn't get a ranking release show, there's one less conference bringing in money, ND would have to join a conference....

Turn P5 into 6... 16 team leagues. 6 Champs plus two at large bids in an 8 team playoff.

8 12 team conferences. Round Robin for 11 games in conference. One OOC game that doesn't count in conference (allows for rivalry and/or marquee matchups). Conference winners only go to playoff.

The problem with conference champs is that it doesn't allow for the team that lost early in the season but is playing well. The problem with not automatically taking conference champs is that Penn State gets screwed. But they are used to it I guess.

Every game counts the same. I don't think a more recent game should be weighted over an early game.

My issue with that is that it doesn't allow much flexibility for the future. The 16 x4 teams will be locked in place indefinitely. I like having the possibility of smaller programs rising up, and of the old guard getting beat. Having 4 conference champs get in, while there are 11 conferences, makes both conference championships and out-of-conference games matter.

I think the larger problem in placing so much emphasis on conference championships is that they don't account for non-conference performance, good or bad. People talk about Ohio State getting in because of the eye test, name recognition, etc. but more than anything, they performed much better in ooc games than Penn State did. On the one hand, if Penn State schedules an easy non-conference slate, perhaps they only have 1 loss and are in the playoff. On the other hand, if Penn State got in over Ohio State it would suggest that non-conference games are pretty much glorified exhibition games.

Ohio State lost to Virginia Tech in the season opener and everyone said it was disqualifying. It wasn't until they tore through Wisconsin on their conference championship that they got the nod. I would say conference championships have little to no bearing on early season losses as most of the time early season is out of conference. Now we have a situation where Ohio State is in even though they didn't make it to the conference game. Looks like it matters only when it favors the popular team.

Everyone's chief complaint about the playoff selection between OSU and PSU is that there are no real criteria for the decision. Even after they make their selection and offer up their weak rationale, we are still going to be tossing bones and interpreting tea leaves. This is old world religious science. Right now we are dancing around a volcano trying to figure out which food Poseidon disfavors.

It's the chicken, you idiots, tuna is good on its own merits.

Once again 1<2
